Several weeks ago the Good Weekdend magazine interviewed Julia De Ville, a taxidermist, artist and jeweller, on her favourite possessions (28/6/08). De Ville mentioned taxidermied animals. In fact, she has 10 taxidermied animals at home as well as 20 pieces she’s incorporated into jewellery. What a ghoulish hobby. Even more ghoulish is De Ville’s plan to taxidermy her own dogs when they die. It gave me the willies just thinking about it. I mean, it’s one thing to taxidermy animals you’re not attached to, it’s another to taxidermy your own pets. That’s my conclusion anyway. Even though, as quacker owners, my sister and I wanted our ducks taxidermied when they died, there was no way we were going to do it ourselves. No, we were going to leave it to the professionals.

I wonder how it would feel to taxidermy your own pet just after it died. Surely the sorrow you’d feel would mean you’d do a less than perfect job. How would you be able to concentrate?

This leads me to the topic of doctors operating on their own relatives. I always wondered if doctors do do this. I asked my doctor about this and he said even though there’s nothing to stop them from doing so, most doctors won’t operate on their loved ones as they feel their emotional attachment is going to cloud their professional judgement. Not to mention their work performance.

I don’t think it would be much fun to be a taxidermist. It would be the same as doing autopsies for a living. Fascinating? Yes. A great conversation opener at dinner parties? Definitely. The ideal job? I don’t think so. Just imagine the smell from having to open up dead animals. The thought of cleaning out their organs so they can then be mounted makes my stomach turn.

Why I Haven’t Yet Bought a Cat

August 28th 2008 21:00

At a work function a few weeks ago, a colleague kept asking me why I hadn’t bought a cat. I have several reasons. First and foremost, I need to get my landlord’s permission. Secondly, I live above someone so I am concerned that the cat could knock things over and disturb my neighbour. When I told my colleague this he looked incredulous but I’m speaking from experience. When my friend Brett brought home two four month old kittens, they were waking up in the middle of the night and running around the kitchen and knocking things over. Brett lives alone in a two bedroom house so he doesn’t have to worry about disturbing other people but I live in a unit. The third reason being I visit my parents every couple of weeks. They live several hours away from me so I stay overnight. I don’t have any neighbours I trust well enough to give them the key to my flat so they can let themselves in and feed the cat. Of course I could always hire a pet sitter but again, I’m funny about having other people in my flat when I’m not around (who wouldn’t be?). I could ask my friends to feed the cat while I’m away but they live in the suburbs while I live near the city so it’s really stretching the friendship for them to travel all the way to my place and back. I can’t count on the rest of my family as they also live several hours away. I’m also an insomniac and I can only sleep under certain conditions: the flat has to be pitch black and dead quiet. Given that the average age of the tenants in my building is about 40 and they work 9 to 5, the latter is not an issue. But having a cat could make it into a big issue, if it is anything like Brett’s.

These explanations might sound like excuses to some people but I believe before anyone gets a pet, they should think hard about their lifestyle choices and whether or not they can provide the sort of responsible and loving home every pet deserves. Amen.

Is Tail Docking Cruel?

August 27th 2008 21:00
Is there anyone out there who still believes in tail docking? I find the practice so wrong. It sounds like the canine equivalent of human plastic surgery. All the pain and suffering a dog has to go through all in the name of vanity. Just so a Rottweiler can look like it’s “supposed to” look like: tailless.

The following web page made me cringe:

RSPCA Tail Docking link

I felt so much pain for the animals, especially when the RPSCA said the procedure is carried out without any anaesthetic. Imagine if humans had to get their limbs amputated without any anaesthetic. The outcry would be huge and people would be saying we were going back to the Dark Ages.

On the other hand, you only need to look at circumcision on male babies to see that some people still have this idea that any surgical procedure that is performed without anaesthetic on a young human being or animal is “okay” as they’re supposed to be too young to remember. That maybe the case (how many men do you meet who can still remember being circumcised a few days after birth?) but it still doesn’t excuse the fact that at the time the procedure is carried out, enormous pain is experienced by the poor baby human/animal.

Of course, there will always be the traditionalists out there who say Rottweilers or Dobermans should have their tails docked to conform to their idea of what such breeds should look like. I have little time for people who espouse tradition. People who say a certain practise should be carried out because it’s “tradition” are presenting a nonsensical argument. As one wise doctor I know called Rodney would say, “There are lots of things that are traditional but that doesn’t mean they’re okay.” Child labour for one. Slavery for another. I’ll gladly add tail docking to the list.

What do you think? Do you prefer breeds such as Rottweilers and Dobermans to have their tails docked for the sake of tradition? Or do you agree with docking being banned?

This has got to be one of the stupidest and unethical things I have ever seen. If you watched 60 Minutes the Sunday before you will know what I’m talking about: surrogate monkey kids.

What a week it’s been for animals in the news. First poor Colin the whale, who was abandoned by his mother, has been finally put to sleep. And then there was the amazing story of the four-eared cat and two-headed turtle my colleague told me about:

I was feeling grouchy today so I decided to compile this list, which sums up exactly how I feel. Enjoy!

Princess Chunk Finds a New Home

August 15th 2008 04:42
My favourite feline of the month, the delightful Princess Chunk has found a new home after it was discovered his owner could no longer keep him. And yes, it has turned out that Princess Chunk is really a male cat called Powder.

Camden County Animal Shelter has been inundated with offers from all over the world from people wanting to adopt the voluptuous puss. Unfortunately, they showed no interest in the Shelter’s 200 other homeless cats.

One Weird(?) Video

August 11th 2008 21:00

Youtube never fails to amaze me. Out of curiosity, I was searching for videos relating to the Warriors series of fantasy cat novels by Erin Hunter. I’ve become a huge fan of this series, despite my previous aversion to sci-fi and fantasy novels.

The Story about Ping

August 3rd 2008 21:00
I came across this book shortly after I lost my beloved ducks, Brown-o and White-o. The book is about a duck called Ping who is left behind from his owner’s boat while he is searching for something to eat. The duck ends up having all sorts of adventures. In the end, Ping and his owners do reunite but he ends up with a big fat smack. The ending almost made me cry as if I ever found Brown-o and White-o again, instead of smacking them, I would throw my arms around them and give them many kisses and cuddles.

Fat Cat Called Princess Chunk Found

August 1st 2008 01:19
A giant 20 kilo cat has been found in New Jersey. The fat puss has been nicknamed Princess Chunk by officials at the Camden County Animal Shelter. Princess Chunk’s owner has until this Saturday to claim her. After that she will be available for adoption. For once in my life I wish I lived in New Jersey so I could get to see this fat cat for myself. The poor thing has probably been pampered for far too long. Hopefully the media coverage will help reunite her with her owner. If so, I hope the owner puts the cat on a diet.

Click on this link to check out the size of her:
