Quirky Folk - September 2008

Painting by William Hogarth. Courtesy of Wikimedia Commons.

It was another long dreary week at work. My colleague was bored. I was just frustrated. I started muttering under my breath. “What did I ever do to deserve this? I wish I was a cat.”

I had photos of my beloved Butterscotch in front of me. I looked at them, feeling envious. All he must worry about is not getting lost and getting fed. What a life! To spend each day playing, sleeping and exploring the roof. Who wouldn’t want to reincarnate as a beloved pet? Imagine if you were a dog: you would spend each day fetching balls, eating, hanging out…doesn’t life look good especially when work is getting frustrating?

Maybe I could come back as a goldfish, although I might find that mind-numbing. But then again, maybe goldfish only have simple needs and are perfectly content to be swimming around in a tank. The same could probably be said for a turtle.

What about a pet bird? No, that might not be fun. Imagine how frustrating it must be copped up in a cage all day when you could be flying around out in the open. On the other hand, the one advantage a pet bird has over a free one is that the pet bird doesn’t have to worry about food. The same could easily apply to gerbils, rabbits, snakes and ferrets.

Still, when times are stressful one can’t help but wish they were someone’s beloved, pampered pet. Which one would you like to be?

Funny Animal Web Sites

September 29th 2008 21:00

My sister introduced me to this web site.

funny cat pictures web site

I find the captions weird. Like, what’s with the incorrect spelling? Maybe I’m a purist but I prefer words to be spelt correctly. Still, I love the photos. There are literally hundreds and hundreds of photos of cats in funny positions. Why isn’t there a canine equivalent of this web site? Just as I was thinking this I came across a link to the doggie version:

Another web site in the same vein is:

stuff ups web site

I love this web site. It’s full of examples of people and animals stuffing up. Some of the architectural stuff ups make you wonder what were the architects/builders were thinking at the time.

Richard’s Nasty Dog

September 28th 2008 21:00

Like many teenagers, when I was sixteen I was heavily into music. At that time, anything by Stock, Aitken and Waterman was all the rage at school. My friend Richard, who was into Midnight Oil (“Oils rule!”) used to tease me and anyone else who liked anything that wasn’t Australian pub rock. Richard was particularly scathing about electronic music, even though he had a Human League album at home.

One day Richard invited me over to his house to listen to some records. I was delighted as I found Richard fun to be with. He was like a brother to me so I knew I could trust him. My parents, however, begged to differ. In their Communist Chinese world, the only nice boys were nice Chinese ones. Your first date happened once you turned eighteen and you were chaperoned the whole time (usually by a relative such as an older sibling). The idea of being friends with a member of the opposite sex was completely foreign to them (excuse the pun). So when I asked my parents for permission to go to Richard’s house, they declined – and declined furiously.

So I decided to sneak over to Richard’s house one day after school. I walked up the driveway and was making my way towards the front door when a dog came flying from behind the house, barking furiously at me. I was stunned. Richard never mentioned anything about having a vicious dog. I remember someone told me the worst thing to do in a situation like this was to run away as it only encouraged the dog to chase after me. So I stood there while the dog kept barking furiously at me. It came up close and sussed me out. After what felt like an eternity, it walked off, still barking. I took the opportunity to flee.

When I told Richard about it the next day, he seemed to find the whole thing hilarious. I didn’t. We stayed friends but I never got invited to his house again.

Cruel Animal Videos on Youtube

September 15th 2008 21:00

Whilst searching on Wikipedia, I came across the following web page which says that Youtube doesn’t seem to remove them from their web site as quickly as they would have with those that are infringing copyright or contain sexual images.

Missing Cat Turns up Nine Years Later

Have you ever read about something so terrible you can’t get it out of your head? That’s how I’ve spent today and yesterday. I couldn’t get the Camrose cat killing out of my head. It doesn’t help that I have a microwave at home. Each time I used it, all I could think of was poor Princess howling her head off, paws glued to the door as she’s trying desperately to escape. What a torturous way to go.

Having lunch with my sister yesterday, that was all I could talk about. I said to her, “What’s next? Microwaving babies?” My sister then mentioned hearing about a baby who died the same way as Princess.

This was one of the worst cases of animal cruelty I have ever come across. In December 2007, four teenage boys in Camrose, Canada break into a house over two days. On the second day they put the family pet, Princess, in a microwave oven. The poor cat screamed in pain for ten minutes before dying. I can imagine how much she would have howled in pain. Tears almost come into my eyes as I’m writing this. I feel so sad. I can’t believe people can be so cruel.

It reminds me of a case a few years ago where some teenagers banged a kitten against a wall before cutting it in half. Another case that makes me shudder was that of Eeyore, a cat that was found with its ears cut off (Cat Fancy magazine, Aug 08). What angers me is how people choose to pick on those who cannot defend themselves. It’s such a low act of cowardice. It also makes me wonder how many other animals are out there who are being abused. No wonder I hate people.
