My Silkworm Nightmare

What’s with my creepy crawly nightmares? First caterpillars and now silkworms!

A few nights ago I was off in dreamland when I had this dream when I was walking along the pavement and there silkworms suddenly appeared in front of me. I tried side stepping them but more and more kept appearing. Finally I was jolted awake. Not a good way to start the day.

The dream was so vivid, too. The silkworms were so white and so wriggly. They looked just like the ones in the picture above. Is my subconsciousness trying to tell me something? Something like, let’s get in touch with your inner phobia? Or maybe, it is telling me to make friends with all the creepy crawlies of the world.

In case you’re wondering if all my dreams tend to be phobia-related, I also have pleasant dreams. Often I am with my nearest and dearest ones, having a good time. My best dream was the one where I was an astronaut, strapped in my seat in a rocket, waiting for take off. I could hear the man counting down to zero and felt the sudden powerful thrust of the rocket as it took off seconds before I woke up.

I also dream about work. The more stressed I am about work, the more I dream about it. I am not the only person who dreams about work. A lady I know who used to work at Prada said she used to have dreams of selling people Prada bags. The difference is it’s a lot more interesting to dream about selling luxury goods than it is to punch numbers into a spreadsheet.

Call me an old fart but I hate New Years Eve. I can’t stand the noise or the drunks. I wonder how my friend’s cats, Butterscotch and Gingersnap, are going to cope, since they only live a block away from a nightclub. Will the noise upset them and make them panic? Or will they simply take it in their stride, like my ex-neighbour’s cats?

When my friend Andea was little, her neighbour had a yellow Labrador who was terrified of loud noises – particularly thunder. She was born during a thunder storm and it had obviously frightened her. No doubt she would have hated New Years Eve.

On the other hand, Andrea lived in a quiet neighbourhood. The area was about ten minutes from the CBD of the town we grew up in so maybe the poor dog didn’t have to go through the stress of reliving her traumatic birth every year.

So I’m planning on a quiet one. I love living near the Sydney CBD area but the price I pay for the convenience is having to put up with noise and drunks from time to time. Given that a five minute walk from my place has panoramic views of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, no doubt there will be many people around tonight.

Ok, enough about me. Go out and party if that tickles your fancy but please don’t forget about your pets. Keep them secured so they can’t run away if they become frightened. Maybe you could try to calm them before you go out. The last thing you want to find when you come home blind drunk is a missing companion animal.

R.I.P. Princess and Daisy Duke

December 29th 2008 21:00

The death of an animal never fails to move me. In fact, I find myself crying a lot these days when I read about cruelty to animals.

Today marks the first year anniversary of the death of Princess, a tabby who was microwaved to death by four teenage boys in Camrose, Canada. Just over two years ago, a collie-Labrador cross dog called Daisy Duke was tortured to death in Didsbury, Canada. Reading about what happened to her brought tears to my eyes.

Googling, I came across a web site with the following taglines:

Wild animals never kill for sport.

Man is the only one to whom the torture and death of his fellow creatures is amusing in itself.

The next time you wonder why I hate people so much, think about what happened to Princess and Daisy Duke and countless of other animals who have been neglected, abused or even tortured to death. Enough said.

Now that we are in the middle of the festive season, my colleagues have been bombarding me with email jokes. This is probably the cutest one out of all the festive jokes they have sent me:

Viewers of Desperate Housewives would know a couple of months ago there was an episode where a family is sheltering in their neighbour’s basement as a tornado is coming. Also there is Ida, their neighbour’s friend, and her cat Toby. So far so good. So what’s the problem?

It’s amazing what modern veterinary techniques can do.

Edgar, a four year old female cat, went missing last week and was later discovered by her owner with her part of her face dangling from her head. The gruesome sight was enough to make her owner pass out.

Dewey the Cat

December 10th 2008 21:00
I’ve been flat out at work lately so I haven’t had much chance to do what I normally do in my spare time: read. Don’t laugh but this week, I struggled to finish a 200 page romance novel.

I’ve managed to get some time to have a browse at my favourite book store and came across a book about Dewey the cat. Skimming through the first chapter almost had me in tears: one winter’s day, an abandoned kitten is found shoved inside a library after-hours collection chute. The kitten is ice cold. One of the librarians takes him in and he becomes the library’s mascot, spending time hanging out in the library, living to the ripe old age of 19.
