Quirky Folk - July 2009

I hate umbrellas. I find them bulky and hate carrying them around. I find them even more annoying to use and I only use them when it is pouring.

Coming home one night, it started to rain thirty seconds before I was about to enter my building. I couldn’t be bothered to open my umbrella and unlocked the front gate. By the time I got to the mailbox, however, it started to pour. Out came the umbrella. I was in the process of getting my mail when I heard a woman call out, “Here tabby, tabby, tabby! Here tabby, tabby, tabby!”

Like any cat lover, I could not turn down this opportunity to meet a new feline on the block. I looked around and was greeted by a bi-colour Persian cat that was lurking between the mailbox and another gate. I looked at him. He looked back at me. I tentatively reached out to stroke his fur. Unlike Robert, the blue Persian that used to hang around my parents’ house, his fur was soft and silky.

A moment later a blonde lady appeared. We swapped names before she introduced me to Asland the Persian, who still refused to budge. We both tried coaxing him but he ignored us. Finally, his owner decided to go inside. “He’ll come home when he’s ready,” she said, giving up. I wondered why she didn’t just pick him up and take him home.

I tried a few more times to get Asland to budge. Finally, probably sick of all the coaxing, he turned his back on me.

Found: Two Kittens

Now that it’s winter, the Grouchy Tuxedo Cat is nowhere to be seen. I still see his bowl so I know he’s alive and around but I never see him these days apart from one night when I saw him hiding in the bushes. What a disadvantage for a cat to have white fur. If it hadn’t been for the white bits on his body I would not have noticed him but in the dark, the moonlight illuminated the white parts of his body. I looked at him and he ignored me.

Several nights later I was walking past the same spot when I heard something move. I looked into the bushes and saw two kittens. One was black, the other was ginger. The ginger one ducked away immediately and disappeared. The black one looked at me with its dark eyes before moving away. Both would have been around twelve weeks old.

I walked away and turned, only to see the black one coming back out from the bushes. So I approached it but it walked away. I walked away and then noticed it coming back out. I approached it and again it walked away.

I was thinking about calling the RSPCA as I suspected the kittens may have been dumped there but it was late at night. The next day I searched the area but they were nowhere to be seen. Someone had also removed the bushes. Hopefully, the same Someone gave them a home.

My best friend Andrea and I have this thing about caterpillars: we find them revolting to look at. At the same time, we are fascinated by them and can’t take our eyes off them.

So it was no surprise I did some poking around the Fear Factor web site and came across this stunt:

Fear Factor web site

As Andrea would say, some people would do anything for money.

It reminded me of a dream I had over the weekend. In the dream, I had to pick up tomato hornworms and other caterpillars off the ground and then eat them. I got a hornworm and a smaller green caterpillar on my leg and I went to brush them away only to have them land beside my foot. My father was in the background ordering me to pick them up and eat them. I then screamed and woke up with my mouth open but silent.

What a way to start the weekend!

A friend, knowing my phobia of maggots, told me about the casu marzu dish, which is a cheese that is filled with maggots, bringing the fermentation to the point of decomposition. You can check this out HERE

A few days after Brett returned from overseas he invited me over to his place for breakfast. Even though I had to go to work, I jumped at the chance to see my favourite boys.

After a stressful weekend where I had several negative interactions with people, I came back to work only to get an email from my friend about a puppy being tortured:

Brett’s Back

July 19th 2009 21:00

Finally Brett has come back from travelling overseas. I hadn’t seen him for several weeks; it felt like several years. When I hugged him, I noticed there were some rough patches on his arm. When I asked what they were, he told me they had been inflicted by Butterscotch and Gingersnap.

This email drew gasps of horror and astonishment as well as laughter from my workmates. One colleague said the kitten’s head looked liked a human brain. A second colleague wondered aloud whether this kitten was real, only to be enlightened by the sender that yes, there is a hairless breed of cat called the Sphynx. Even cat-lover me struggled to find anything redeeming about this baby. I told myself like a Shar Pei, it will grow into its wrinkles.

Gives a new meaning to the phrase, “One ugly cat” which a colleague used to describe my beloved Butterscotch…
