Quirky Folk - August 2009

Bad Cat

August 31st 2009 21:02

It was that time of the year again: my birthday. Despite my wishes that my friends make donations to the RSPCA and Cat Protection Society instead of buying presents, I ended up with new additions to my growing library.

Surprisingly, none of them were about cats. In a way, I couldn’t blame my friends. I have so many cat books that chances are high that they would end up buying me something I already had.

Then came my colleagues. One of them bought me a copy of Bad Cat. She must have been psychic: this was one cat book I didn’t have. She then told me she was going to get me a book about Dewey the cat.

“Lucky you didn’t,” I said. “I’ve already got that one.”

Bad Cat
was cheerful as most good humour books are. But there were two photos of cats with missing ears. One of them was even missing an eye. It made me wonder if they had been abused, although the one missing the eye and ears was a white cat, so it may have lost its ears due to skin cancer.

Double Income, no Kittens

August 30th 2009 21:00

My colleague’s wife is pregnant. Two of my other colleagues are already fathers so it’s natural that the three of them discuss babies.

That’s where I come into the picture.

“I’m a SINK,” I told the father-to-be proudly.

“A SINK?” he asked.

“Yep. Single income, no kids. And if I had a bloke that would be DINK, double income no kids.” I then remembered Butterscotch. “Actually, I am already a DINK, as in double income, no kittens.”

My colleague laughed. “Where does his income come from?” he asked.

“Mice.”

“Mice aren’t income,” he said.

“Yes, they are. It means he can provide for himself which means I don’t have to buy him Whiskas.”

“And the kittens?”

“Well, the Cat Protection Society made sure he had an operation so he can’t father kittens.”

“You mean the snip? Or the chop?”

He got me stumped there. In which category does desexing fall in?

“What a shame,” I said. “My handsome boy can’t pass on his DNA.”

Asland the Persian has Moved out

Just as I was settling in to my new building I was given sad news: my neighbour was moving out and she was taking Asland the Persian with her.

Not fair! She was the only person in my building who had a companion animal and she was going. Not only that, she was one of the few female neighbours I had; everyone else was male and it did feel a little creepy to be surrounded by all these men.

So it’s back to fantasising about having my own cats since my new landlord won’t let me have animals either. At least I now get to see Butterscotch and Gingersnap more often.

Can Cats Use a Human Toilet?

August 25th 2009 21:00

I thought my ex-neighbour was joking when she told me this but she swears it is true: you can train a cat to use a human toilet.

Returning from an overseas holiday, my sister decided to collect her goldfish. She lives close to work so it was no big deal to leave the goldfish at her workplace and have her colleagues feed it twice a day. One colleague even comes into the office during the weekends, solving the problem of how it was going to be fed when no one else is in the office.

I accompanied my sister on her mission to pick up her goldfish. Ironically, the following sign was sitting above the goldfish bowl:

Walking around the Rocks one weekend, I noticed the following picture that was painted on someone’s front door.

Will you be my neighbour? We can share our passion for kitties together. I’m sure you would have a kitty of your own who would love to become friends with me. And I can help cat sit when you are away.
