R.I.P. Roger

Unfortunately, another kitten has left our planet. Little Roger, who was adopted by one of my colleagues. She had found him and his sibling near her house and she decided to keep him. (His sibling went to the RSPCA.) He was only a couple of weeks old at the time.

I hadn’t run into my colleague for several months. Until today, that is. I asked how Roger was going and she told me she had to put him down because of organ failure. He had been sick and in a lot of pain so she took him to the vet. That was when she discovered just how sick he was. He was only four months old when he passed on. Such a brief life and yet, so cherished.

My Secret Maggot

Cleaning the bathroom one morning, I reached for the Toilet Duck. I unscrewed the cap and happened to turn it over to notice a maggot embedded inside the cap. I looked at it closely, hoping it was dead. I then tried to flush it down the bathroom sink but the force of the water only ended up pushing the maggot further up the cap. Given my maggot phobia, there was no way I was going to get a needle to pry it out.

I then poured Toilet Duck inside the toilet bowl before going back to examining the dead maggot inside the cap. How on earth did it end up there? Why on earth would a maggot crawl inside there? Aren’t maggots supposed to be attracted to rotting organic material, particularly meat? What interest would it have in ingesting Toilet Duck?

After I had these thoughts, I screwed the cap back on and put the Toilet Duck away. A case of out of sight, out of mind.

Butterscotch and Gingersnap’s new Diet

September 27th 2009 21:00

Cat sitting for Brett one night, the first thing I did after checking to see his moggies were okay was to check the food and water bowls. Yes, there was water but no, there was no food. I raided Brett’s kitchen cupboards until I found the cat food. To my surprise, there was no Science Diet around. Instead, my favourite boys were now eating Purina Supercoat (salmon and tuna flavour to be exact). No wonder my boys had such strong tuna breath.

It’s amazing what treasures you can find when you least expect it. After spending an afternoon at the Australian National Maritime Museum, my sister and I decided to check out the gift shop. Among the sort of gifts one would expect from the ANMM gift shop to carry e.g. replica boats, globes and books about the history of seafaring was a cats and dogs section. I almost went nuts looking at the books about ship cats. Then I found this:

My husband Butterscotch and I are not happy. One of his relatives has been shot in the face some thirteen times. He may be left permanently blind in one eye.

The Science of Bowl Licking

September 22nd 2009 21:00

Bowl licking is one of my nasty habits. Another one is using my finger to swipe up any remaining sauce before licking it. It drives my parents crazy. They also hate it when I scrape off all the leftover sauce.

The Search is on…for Cat Fancy Magazine

Now that the Borders CBD store has closed down, my colleagues and I are at a loss as to where we could find a newsagent that would stock the same imported magazines as Borders.

Pedigree Dogs Exposed Documentary

September 13th 2009 21:00

What an eye opener this documentary was. I turned on the ABC channel last Thursday expecting to see some documentary about how wonderful show dogs are and instead was confronted by several experts saying pedigree dogs in the UK have been inbred to the point where they are in danger of extinction. One scary statistic cited was that out of the 10,000 pugs that are in the UK, only fifty of them are distinct individuals or have distinct DNA. The reason for this is due to the widespread incestuous matings; it is common for breeders to use parent/child or brother/sister matings. What society would find revolting in the human world is accepted in the dog (and cat) breeding world.

My Fall from Race

September 10th 2009 21:00

Don’t you hate this? Showering one night, my mobile goes off. I was expecting an important call so I turned the shower off and started to walk towards the phone. Unbeknown to be, some suds from the shampoo that was still in my hair had fallen onto the floor. I reached towards the phone and slipped. Before I could break my fall I had landed on my back with my arms and legs flying in the air, just like the penguin in the March of the Penguins.
