Butterscotch’s new Admirer

My friend Karina was in town. Being the hospitable person that I am, I let her have first choice as to where to have dinner. She suggested the Arun Thai restaurant in Potts Point. I had no objections since it is my favourite restaurant.

Halfway through our meal I pulled out one of my favourite photos of Butterscotch. I put it near my plate.


“My husband,” I explained.

“He’s so cute,” said Karina. It’s about time someone else apart from me and Brett noticed his beauty. So far, all I have heard from other people is that he is “one ugly cat” and “has a dirty stare”. The best I have gotten is a giggle when I did the same thing at another dinner.

I showed Karina that photo a couple of times that night. Each time she responded with, “He’s cute.” Of course he is. And not just cute. Try handsome, gorgeous, breathtaking, stunning…

Levels of Ignorance

My colleague was telling me one afternoon that he had a friend who had no idea that cats purr. He found out one day when he invited her over to his place. His cat was sitting there purring and the friend asked him what the noise was. He told her the cat was purring. Imagine his surprise when she had no idea what he was talking about.

I laughed but then told him I had a similar experience with my ex-neighbour’s cats. Before my neighbour moved into the unit next to mine, I had no close hand experience with cats although I knew they purred. I just never had the opportunity to hear them purr so I didn’t know what it sounded like. It didn’t help that her cats tended to be quiet – until one Sunday afternoon I heard a deep rumbling sound coming from one of them. I asked her what that sound was and she said it was the purr.

Another mistake I made was thinking a dog had to live seven human years before it was considered to be a year old. But I was a young teenager when I made that mistake so that doesn’t count.

I like to grunt. So does my sister. Grunting is a family tradition. It started with my old man. He would grunt whenever he wanted to rant and rave about something. My sister and I started mimicking him, causing us to make this grunting sound that makes us sound like we are constipated.

Who ever knew my beloved Butterscotch has a twin? Just compare his photo with the Cat Blanchett one below. My colleague said this is the closest cat he has ever seen in its resemblance to Butterscotch. You be the judge.

One Strange Bird

Who knew birds could be so clever? In the video below, you will see a bird that tears up a newspaper and then uses the strip to insert amongst its back feathers. What’s amazing is how the new ‘feather’ doesn’t fall out once it has been inserted. This bird makes my sister’s budgies look tame and placid by comparison…

The Secret Cat Lover

It turns out one of my colleagues also loves cats but unlike me, he chooses to keep it to himself. I had no idea that we had a love of cats in common until he started sitting next to me. Whenever our work software package freezes, I noticed he would chuckle. One day I turned around to see what he was laughing at and I noticed he was on the icanhascheezburger web site.

Oops! The cat Farted

Was it the human or the cat?

My ex-neighbour swears cats fart. I have never come across a single farting cat in my life. Numerous hours spent with Butterscotch, Gingersnap, Higgins and Miggins have not yielded one fart.
