Pet Lover Goes Insane

February 28th 2010 21:00

How apt is the name of this series of books? Pet Love HERE. That’s exactly how I feel about Butterscotch and Gingersnap. They are my babies and I treasure every minute I spend with them. Just watching their little cat faces makes my heart melt. If only I could feel the same way about (human) babies…Okay, so I do ooh and ahh whenever someone shows me their little one but if you have ever seen the way I gasp in pleasure whenever I see an animal, you would know babies are not quite the thing for me and yes, I have a big case of Pet Love.

“From reading your blog I can tell you are happily insane,” wrote a friend who got in touch with me after he couldn’t access my facebook account. For some reason, instead of emailing me at my home or work email address, he went to my blog and decided to go the Orble Private Message route.

My friend is not alone. I get told all the time that I am different (Brett and Skye), strange (my colleague) and weird (this tends to come from ex-neighbours whom I did not get along with). When I ask these people to explain in detail what is it about me that makes me different/strange/weird they are unable to articulate. So how can you pass judgement on another person when you can’t even explain why? At least my facebook friend says one of the things that sets me apart from other people is the way I write about my four-legged friends. I guess it’s not everyday that you come across someone who refers to their friend’s cat as her husband…

The GTC’s Identity is Finally Revealed

February 25th 2010 21:00

For months I have nicknamed the cat whose name I don’t know the GTC (Grouchy Tuxedo Cat). Coming home one night, I saw a man feeding her. I could not turn down the opportunity to find out more about her. I quickly approached the man and asked him if she was his cat, despising myself for asking such a stupid question. To my surprise, he said no. It turns out the GTC was a stray who turned up outside his block of units. Since he was a cat lover – to the point where he had gotten cat tattoos on his arm – he tried to find out who she belonged to. No one knew so he started feeding her. She has been living outside his block of units ever since.

Eighteen months on, he is now looking for other people to help feed the GTC, who he has now named Blanche. He told me he was thinking about calling the Cat Protection Society and seeing if they could find Blanche a home. I was about to offer to help chip in for the food when his mobile rang. He waved goodbye to me and off I went. I came back several minutes later, hoping he had now completed his call but he had already gone.

Anyone who was around in the seventies would probably remember this. I had completely forgotten about this song until a few months ago when I found the book in a book store that specialised in gardening titles. My mind slowly wandered down memory lane and I could remember the tune, but not the actual words. I had to hear the song and watch the clip again. I headed to YouTube, the place for all things old and beautiful and there it was.

I used to see this clip on the ABC. It used to be the highlight of my day.

“Yip, yip, yip…”

February 18th 2010 21:00

One of the perks of being a caretaker is getting to know everyone’s secrets. Years ago, when I used to live in one of the buildings Fred looks after, I had to put up with a teenage girl who lived above me. Like all teenagers, she threw loud parties and had loud…ahem…let’s say, intimate relations. The strange part about the latter was instead of the usual moans and groans, she would make dog noises. “Yip, yip, yip,” was what I heard.
