Quirky Folk - April 2010

Where’s Butterscotch?

April 29th 2010 21:03

As a self employed audio visual man, Brett has to take whatever work he can get which is why I have not seen him for several weeks. We had taken holidays at the same time and had planned to spend time hanging out together until a client of his suddenly asked him if he was interested in doing an AV project for them. Brett said yes and next thing you knew, I was spending my holidays sans Brett which meant sans Butterscotch and Gingersnap. Instead, I spent my holidays catching up with Fred, moaning about my lack of feline contact.

Just as my holidays were about to finish, Brett told me he had finished the project and asked when I was free to catch up. I said now and next thing you knew, I was racing off to see my darling boys.

As usual, Gingersnap was sitting on top of Brett’s Chesterfield lounge.

“Where’s Butterscotch?” I asked him.

“He’s over there.”

I turned around. “Where?” I asked.

“In the corner.”

I almost jumped. He was tucked in this little corner on the kitchen counter, wedged behind the microwave and sitting right on top of Brett’s mail.

“Hello, husband,” I said.

Butterscotch simply looked at me. Before I had time to reach for my camera to record this cute but scary moment, he leapt off the counter and landed on the floor.

Later on, I noticed that their food bowl was empty. As if reading my mind, Gingersnap approached me and started rubbing his face against my legs before working on my hand. Then Butterscotch appeared. They then started following me around. I reached inside the cupboard and found the bag of cat food. I opened it and Butterscotch made a beeping sound. I poured the dried food out for them and Butterscotch started munching away.

Stool Pigeons

April 28th 2010 21:00

Several years ago, one of my friends and I worked for the same company. We had a supervisor who was famous for being petty. My friend took a dislike to him and gave him all sorts of nicknames.

One day, while I was busy working away, I heard her say, “He’s a stool pigeon.”

Another colleague overheard her and started laughing.

“What is a stool pigeon?” I asked. I remember coming across the term in Judy Blume’s Blubber but apart from that, I had not heard anyone use the term so I was unfamiliar with it.

The other colleague said, “It’s an informant.”

“Oh,” I said, “a dobber.” We all ended up laughing at my ignorance.

Cut to circa 2008/2009. I was listening to a funk music segment on FBI radio when I heard one of the presenters say they were going to play a song called Stool Pigeon by Kid Creole and the Coconuts. I immediately started laughing and wondered how the song went. They then put it on and I recognised it straight away. To this day, whenever someone mentions stool pigeons I think of my old friend and Kid Creole and vice versa.

Gingersnap on the Drums

April 27th 2010 21:00

Bored one lazy Saturday afternoon, my sister and I decided to watch a clip Brett had given me of his nephew forcing Butterscotch to play air drums. My sister watched, not amused.

“That could be abuse,” she said. “You can tell he doesn’t want to play. Bad boy.”

A few moments later, she said, “Look, he’s trying to bite him.” A pause. “Why doesn’t he get Gingersnap to play drums instead of Butterscotch? After all, he’s the gentler one so he would just sit there and do it.”

I thought for a moment before answering. “Gingersnap is a very placid cat. You could do basically anything to him and he would go along with it. Brett’s nephew seems to get off on the fact Butterscotch reacts.” If you don’t believe me, just look at the above photo.

“You are so easy to buy for,” said a colleague when she decided to get me a birthday present. “Everyone knows you love cats so I knew I had to get you something cat related.”

Kittens In Sync

April 6th 2010 21:00

Now how clever are these babies? When my ex-neighbour tried to do this her cats barely moved. Ditto Brett’s cats. When he clicks his fingers or makes funny noises in his quest to get them to do something, they just ignore him. But these little fur babies just move in sync with one another, including the kitten that appears towards the end of the clip.

I can’t believe I am one of the few people in the world who hasn’t seen this…Okay, maybe I am exaggerating but it’s not every day you come across a video on Youtube that has been viewed some ten million times. It’s also handy to know that my beloved Gingersnap is not the only cat who dislikes cameras…
