Gingersnapped!

May 31st 2010 21:00

I hadn’t seen my boys for a fortnight, although Brett has been giving me updates. I finally got my kitty fix last night. As soon as Brett answered the door I went in search of the cats. To my disappointment, Brett told me his nephew had just been here and he must have let them out.

With no feline in sight, I sat down and started watching TV with Brett. He is the sort of person who must have the TV on, regardless of whatever is on. Brett offered me some biscuits – ironically they were gingersnaps. As I nibbled away, Brett said, “Gingersnap will come back. As for Butterscotch…”

“Great,” I said. After reading about the cat that was microwaved to death and other such atrocities against animals, I don’t like the idea of my boys roaming around at night. Even though Brett says his neighbours love them, I can’t shake off the fear that someday they will be met with foul play.

After half an hour later, I heard a soft thud. I went out to the backyard and there was Gingersnap. He walked in with me following and then he came up to me and head butted my leg before doing the same thing to my hand.

“Do you think he recognises me?” I asked Brett.

“When he goes out and I find him on the street and call out to him he will come over so he must.”

Later on, Gingersnap started nipping at my hand. Unused to that kind of behaviour from him, I took my hand away.

“He won’t bite,” said Brett. “He’s just playing.” Not like Butterscotch who really will sink his teeth into people…

Loyalty

May 30th 2010 21:01

“Gingersnap is so loyal,” says Brett of his ginger coloured Tonkinese cat. “While Butterscotch ignores me. When I call his name he runs off.”

This comes as no surprise to me, given Butterscotch’s feisty nature. I can even imagine him as a kitten. He’d be the biggest kitten amongst his siblings, the first one to suck his mother’s nipple. I can imagine Butterscotch’s mummy looking at him with pride and thinking, “My beautiful, intelligent and feisty son.” Being always first to get on his mother’s nipple has led him to grow faster than his siblings, leading to the large, strong cat that he is today.

The GTC Turns Friendly

May 27th 2010 21:00

My old feline pal, the Grouchy Tuxedo Cat, has been ignoring me lately. I miaow at her and she ignores me. Often she is thumping her tail on the ground – a clear sign of agitation according to my cat psychology books. Other people have been complaining about how anti-social she has been. I knew from past experience to let sleeping cats lie, so to speak.

So imagine how surprised I was to see her come up to me and brush her waving tail against my lower legs. She even miaowed at me. I wondered what she wanted as often she gets friendly when she is hungry. I checked her food and water dishes and they were full. Good. So she wanted to make friends then. Fine. I knelt down and gently rubbed my finger against the back of her head. A couple of rubs later and I was off; this is not a cat who likes to be stroked for too long so I stopped before she had the chance to turn on me.

Falling Over Like a cat

May 12th 2010 21:00

Although I can be clumsy, it is rare for me to trip over. So imagine my surprise when I was walking in the Rocks with my sister and I suddenly lost my balance and started to fall over. I reached out to break my fall and ended up landing with my palms on the ground, supporting my weight.
