Quirky Folk - June 2010

My new Friend Pepe

June 30th 2010 21:04

Exercising after work one afternoon, I came across the tuxedo cat who hangs around Brett’s old place. I knelt down to stroke her and she came up and rubbed her body against me several times before rubbing her head against my knees and hands. She then lay on her back and let me gently touch her belly. Finally she put her front paws on my lap and started kneading me. It hurt but not as much as when Gingersnap does it. I kept stroking her and she moved closer to me such that she could then climb on top of me and sit on my lap. I sat down but she wasn’t interested; she only wanted to sit on my lap while I was kneeling down. Fine, I thought, I’ll kneel down then. Once again, she climbed on top of me. I let her rub her face against my hand and I could hear her purring softly. “Good girl,” I whispered in her ear as I cuddled her. It’s times like this when I wonder how people can be cruel to animals when they can be so affectionate.

By now, a couple of passers-by had stopped to watch us interacting. I asked them if they knew her name but they all said no. One of them said, “She’s a funny cat. She likes to sit on the pavement. That’s all she does all day.”

I then continued with my exercise. By the time I had finished, it was getting dark. I went past Brett’s old house and there she was. Some people who lived in the house next door suddenly walked past us, saying something that sounded like pair-pair.

“Excuse me,” I asked the old man who was doing most of the talking, “is that your cat?”

“No. She just likes to hang around here.”

“Do you know what her name is?”

“Pepe,” he said, pronouncing it as “pair-pair”. “P-E-P-E.”

“Thanks,” I said.

I soon discovered Pepe belonged to the people who lived on the other side of Brett’s old place. How perfect! I love looking at Brett’s old place; it is beautiful and sophisticated-looking white terrace house but the rent was astronomical due to its clear view of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. That was why Brett decided to move to a cheaper place.

Oscar the Bionic Cat

June 29th 2010 21:00

Any cat lover who purchased a copy of yesterday’s Daily Telegraph would have been charmed by the amount of cats in that issue. First was the Whiskas ad on page three, then there was the cat gallery on pages 18 to 19. Finally, there was the story about Oscar the bionic cat. This poor feline had lost his back legs in a combine harvester. Close to death, he made a miraculous recovery before he was fitted with prosthetic legs. Just watch him in action HERE .

No doubt Butterscotch and Gingersnap would be proud of how resourceful and resilient their “relative” can be.

Junk Mail

Like many people, I hate junk mail. It is a waste of time, money and trees. It is like a shot in the dark for the companies that engage in this kind of advertising: Imagine sending out thousands of pamphlets on the off chance that maybe one per cent of the recipients will read it. I particularly hated the junk mail I used to receive from a certain department store after I signed up for their store card.

For the first couple of years, I didn’t get any junk mail from them except when I got my credit card statement. That was when they would enclose a brochure showing special deals that their cardholders could take advantage of.

About three years ago they started sending me junk mail all the time. This time they would offer me free perfume and beauty samples. What annoyed me was the fact I never consented to getting junk mail in the first place. The other thing that annoyed me was half the time when I went to the store to redeem these offers, they either had just run out of samples, or the samples had not arrived yet and they would give me a call when they were available. Of course, they never called and I felt cheated.

What really made me lose it was the fact that on the back of their junk mail was a phone number and email address you could use to tell them you no longer wanted to receive junk mail from them. I emailed them three times and despite their assurances, they continued to send me junk mail. Finally, I sent them an email saying that if they continued to send me junk mail I would simply throw it into the recycling bin so they may as well save themselves the time and effort and take me off their mailing list. That did the trick. I also chopped up my store card.

Dog Smiles Like Anime ( ^_^ )

June 10th 2010 21:00

Does this dog smile? Or is it a sneer? Even when its mouth isn’t moving, the dog looks like it is smiling. This can be deceptive. Imagine if this dog was a guard dog and it had the same happy look on its face. An intruder would think nothing of jumping over the fence…only to get bitten. You can’t even help but smile back at the dog; it looks so friendly. It even made me smile and I was in a grumpy mood. One of my colleagues even commented on my lack of people skills.

Butterscotch’s Band

June 8th 2010 21:00

Like many animal lovers, I like to fantasise about my favourite felines. My latest one involves a feline band. Butterscotch is the drummer and lead singer while Gingersnap is on the keyboards. Another two felines play the bass and guitar.
