Kitten Murderers

July 29th 2010 21:00

Speaking of kitten-haters (see previous post), a few days ago I found this book in a bookstore HERE. I have flicked through many of this author’s books as they are mainly about animals but so far I haven’t felt compelled to buy any of them as the writing style doesn’t seem to grab me. (As the owner of several hundred books, I am now trying to stop myself from buying more books by trying to restrict myself to ones I simply can’t put down.)

Still, I managed to read enough of the book to feel sad. Part of the story was about a man who drowns his farm cat’s kittens. He has done this several times and is wondering why she keeps having more babies. I felt like shaking the man; how can anyone be so stupid? Driven by pure instinct, of course his cat is going to continue to breed and if he doesn’t want any more kittens why doesn’t he simply get the cat desexed?

Back home, I find a copy of Cat Fancy magazine in my bedroom. It is the annual kitten issue and I tried to imagine myself drowning them. My eyes almost water. They are my children.

Still, I now feel compelled to go back to that bookstore and have another flick at that book. I might just end up buying it just to see if the man later changes his attitudes towards the feline population.

The old cat versus dog Debate

July 28th 2010 21:00

This debate has gone for so long it must be a cliché in the pet owners’ world. My sister was consoling me the day after I had my fight with Brett when she started saying she wanted a dog.

“You should get a cat,” she said. “Then you wouldn’t need to spend so much time with his cats.”

That’s not the point, I thought. It wouldn’t be the same cat.

“I prefer dogs to cats,” continued my sister, “but if I had to get a cat I would get a kitten. I could then train it.”

“Have you ever spent time with kittens? They’re great but they crash and bang around at 3 in the morning. It’s a phase they all go through. Once they reach adulthood they spend most of the time sleeping. I prefer a cat to a kitten any day,” I said, speaking from experience.

“I could feed it earlier so it could then go to bed the same time as me,” said my sister with hope in her eyes. This is the same person who told me several months ago she didn’t like kittens as they were “funny” looking. Kitten-haters are weird.

Fighting With Brett

July 27th 2010 21:00

Another day, another dollar as my best friend would say. I am currently fighting with Brett. As usual, the cats played their part in this fight: I barely got to even spend time with Butterscotch before the two of us started arguing over something. I stood up for myself. Brett accused me of getting on my high horse. I then left – but not before I managed to get a love bite from Butterscotch.

When I told my sister, all she said was, “Even his cats hate you.” Great.

Still, I got to spend more time with Gingersnap. He came up to me several times, wanting kitty rubs. He washed himself in front of me. With joy, I inhaled the scent of his tuna breath.

The rest of the day was spent having a text message fight with Brett. It was going nowhere. Each party insisted they were in the right. I know my psychologist friend would tell me to either flick him or to wrap things up with “We will never see eye to eye on this issue so let’s agree to disagree.” I don’t like either of these options. Life sucks.

Happy Rudy

July 18th 2010 21:00

Watching this video was like seeing one of my favourite fantasies come true: The simplicity of seeing a cat wash his face. And not just any cat but a breathtakingly beautiful one. Of course I’m biased because Rudy is the same breed as my favourite boys.

My Hopes Have Been Dashed

July 13th 2010 21:00

Coming home from work one night, I was umming and aahing about attending a body corporate meeting I had been invited to, even though I was a renter, not owner. In the end I thought, what the hell, it’s worth attending just in case I decide I may one day want to buy one of the units.

I Feel so sad

July 6th 2010 21:00

I am in tears again after hearing about Snowy on a news flash on Monday night. The poor moggie had been set alight. What is it about people that make them so diabolical? My other thought was it must have been pretty serious attack for it to make the news. I reached for the remote control to record it but it was too late. I then waited for subsequent news flashes; Snowy was bumped off in favour of stories about humans. Typical.

One Faulty Book

Several months ago, I came across one of the I Can Has Cheezburger? books at one of my favourite bookstores. Excited and delighted, I purchased a copy on the spot without checking the pages.
