Quirky Folk - August 2010

There’s a cat in There…

August 31st 2010 21:00

Hanging out with Fred one day, he mentioned he heard a cat yowling on the second floor of my building. The penny dropped: That must be the source of the yowling I heard a couple of weeks ago, when I had thought I had heard a cat having intimate relations with a tom.

After Fred had left I was going down the stairs when I heard the yowling coming from the same spot as where Fred detected it. I smiled in joy; I know the person who lives there and I thought, you lucky b*stard!

I later told Fred the guy was lucky to not have been evicted; the body corporate in my building passed a by-law years ago banning pets from the building. Even if the guy’s landlord/lady didn’t have a problem with him having a pet, he would still need to get around the BC. That said, the BC was more concerned about dogs but still, a yowling cat is bound to get some complaints.

Feline hot Water Bottles

August 30th 2010 21:02

The hot water bottles.

It’s been a couple of weeks and again, I have not seen my boys. I asked Brett for an update.

Unlike other occasions, Brett didn’t have much feline gossip to share. All he could tell me was during winter, Butterscotch and Gingersnap have been cold and have been snuggling up to Brett to keep warm. Imagine that: having two felines acting as hot water bottles. Who needs a heater when you have cats? Who needs a rug when you can stroke their fur instead? Who needs to feel lonely when you have such wonderful cuddly companions?

I have been lonely. Not for people, but for felines. I now walk to Tima’s house so I can get to play with her. Maybe she will come running towards me like how Pepe used to. And where is the GTC? I haven’t seen her for weeks. Is she still alive? (I hope so.)

The Source of the Maggots

The next day, my sister solved her workplace maggot mystery (see previous post).

Arriving at work, she noticed more maggots on her desk. She decided to investigate. She pulled out her drawers and found an old plastic bag full of old Milo. It was completely infested with maggots. My sister’s stomach churned and she managed to dispose of the packet without making a fuss. She then asked the cleaner to fumigate the office.

Her story reminded me of someone we knew who discovered maggots in the packet of flour she kept in the kitchen.

“That’s why I don’t like to keep a lot of food in the kitchen,” I told my sister. “Maggots like rotten food so I only have enough food I can consume within a week. And if I do have anything old, I regularly check it to make sure it hasn’t gone off.”

There have been no complaints since then. Hopefully, my sister has taken my advice – but then again, it’s only early days.

Let’s Just put the cat in the bin

August 25th 2010 21:00
I am sure that if the feline population could read, they would be yowling in protest at this shameless abuse of one of their relatives. I’m sure Butterscotch would be HERE:

Working away on Tuesday morning, I looked up to find a couple of colleagues talking about a bin.

This all started a couple of weeks ago. I would come home around dinner time and hear yowling. It sounded like a cross between a baby’s cry and a cat’s yowl. My best friend Andrea (and owner of several cats) reckons it’s the sound of a queen having intimate relations with a tom.

What’s Wrong With This Book?

August 19th 2010 21:00

From time to time, I come across wonderful books that are in the bargain bin while trite ones hit the best seller lists. I don’t get this.

R.I.P. Beloved Lambs

August 18th 2010 21:00

I’m back in misanthrope mode. A few days ago, I was minding my own business when this grumpy old man started accusing me of crashing into him when I wasn’t anywhere near him. I raised my voice and shouted “F*CK OFF!” I think I’m going to do that every time someone tries to pick a fight with me.

This Book Better be Good

August 8th 2010 21:00

Recently, one of my favourite bookstores decided to have a children’s book clearance. Naturally, I was there on the first day of the sale; you never know what treasures you might find. I was hoping to get some books by Michael Morpurgo since I enjoyed the Nine Lives of Montezuma so much, but all of his work was full price (must be too popular). However, I did find a copy of Blitzcat by Robert Westall HERE .

This is not What you Think

August 5th 2010 21:00

After shopping for books one day, one of my colleagues asked me if I had purchased anything. This is a routine we go through every week: I borrow his discount card and when I return it, he’ll ask me what I got. (I would buy my own discount card to this particular shop if it wasn’t for the fact it is expensive and, based on past experience, I don’t buy enough books from this store to recoup the annual membership fee.)

I spent the past couple of days thinking about this book (this is the one where a boy’s father drowns the farm cat’s kittens) HERE. I couldn’t get the story out of my head and wanted to know what happened. In the end I thought, stuff it, it’s a slim volume so it’s not going to take up much room in my ever-growing library. I went back to the bookstore in search of it.

Working Hard

August 1st 2010 21:00

Working back with the rest of my team one night, we stopped for five minutes to take a quick break. I started telling my colleagues how it now takes me about three weeks to finish a book.
