Quirky Folk - September 2010

Moving Desk

September 30th 2010 21:00

One Friday, my team had to move desks. Having done this before, I knew what to do.

A colleague asked me if I needed a hand with anything. I said I could do most of it myself but if he didn’t mind helping me move the heavy stuff, that would be great.

“I’ll help you move, but you can leave the cats where they are,” he said, referring to my cat photo collection that decorates my cubicle.

“No way!” I said. In fact, the cat gallery was the first thing I moved since it was the lightest.

How can he dislike them so much, especially when I have decorated my cubicle with pictures printed off the internet of cats such as Mymystic Chiffon? I swear, the Mymystic cats are probably the most beautiful Tonks in the world. I hate to say this, but some of them are even better looking than fellow breed members Butterscotch and Gingersnap.

Don’t believe me? Just check this out:

Cynicism

September 29th 2010 21:00

It was the day after baby elephant Mr Shuffles was believed to have been stillborn. I remember seeing him on the news the night before; the news reader had said what a tragedy that this elephant was born dead. The next day, though, the papers and news readers were telling a different story: Miraculously, the baby elephant was actually alive all the time, despite tests and behavioural signs showing otherwise.

On that very day one of my colleagues had lent me his paper. I was idly flicking through the pages, quickly glancing at the headlines before going back to work when he started laughing.

“You can tell there’s no real news when an elephant’s birth makes the front page of the paper,” he chuckled.

I then noticed the front page. “That’s true. If it was September 11 I’m sure the elephant would be towards the back of the paper.” I wasn’t saying that to be bitchy but to point out a fact about human nature; as animal liberationist Peter Singer would say, people tend to value human life over other living beings.

“Not just September 11. If there was a football scandal the elephant would still be at the back of the paper.” My colleague is sports-mad. What surprises me is he doesn’t listen to Fire Up, a weekly tongue in cheek send up of rugby league shenanigans that is broadcast on FBI radio – but that’s another story.

For those who missed it, the story is here:

Bird Killers

September 28th 2010 21:00

During my latest visit to Brett’s house, the topic of his cats killing birds came up.

“So do they come in with dead birds and give them to you as presents? Or are the birds still alive and they kill them in front of you?” I asked out of interest.

“Neither,” said Brett.

“Then how do you know they kill birds?”

“Cats are primal. They are hunters.”

“I know but how do you know for sure?”

“I see dead birds and mice outside.” Aha! Brett then turned to look at Butterscotch. “It’s Butterscotch who kills them. You’re a killer, aren’t you?”

“How do you know it’s not Gingersnap?”

“Gingersnap wouldn’t. He’s dumb.”

“No, he’s not.” I still wasn’t satisfied by Brett’s arguments. Okay, so the dead birds and rodents were a sign that my boys had been hunting but to say only one of them was a hunter…I find this absurd.

Facebook Tagging

September 26th 2010 21:00

It must be a generation thing; most of my friends hate Facebook and refuse to have accounts. Those that do are very wary of what information they disclose to others – to the point of setting up ‘silent’ accounts (where people cannot search for them) until Facebook did away with that option. I count myself as one of these wary people.

Tonk…Tonk…Tonkians?

September 21st 2010 21:00

Back in the day when I knew virtually nothing about cats, I happened to be pawed and sniffed at by Butterscotch and Gingersnap. Out of curiosity, I asked their parent, Brett, what breed they were.

The cat Made me do it

September 1st 2010 21:00
Last week was a big one for felines as far as news/TV coverage was concerned. First, Snowy the burnt cat was on RSPCA Animal Rescue. Then a cat was put in the bin HERE.

Two days later, a cat was found cut in half. When will it ever end? HERE
