Is Goat Racing Fun?

October 31st 2010 21:02

I normally don’t watch Today Tonight. Due to its tabloid nature, it has to have something really gripping to make me turn it on. That said, when I heard they were doing stores about goat racing in rural Australia last Tuesday and Wednesday, I had to watch it.

I could not understand how anyone could call this fun. 1) Goats were being injured as they hurled themselves against fences; 2) children were also being injured by the force of the goats running, often propelling the young ones off the carts that were attached to the goats. The lack of empathy amongst spectators and those who endorsed the races because it was apparently good for tourism made my mind boggle. How entertaining can it be watching people and animals being injured? I certainly would not want to visit any place where animals were placed in a position of being subject to distress and abuse just so us humans can be entertained; I’m even uncomfortable watching seal shows at the zoo.

I was glad to see Animal Liberation was campaigning to end these vicious acts of cruelty HERE . No wonder I still hate people. And Melbourne Cup is coming up tomorrow. Don’t even get me started…

Sooky Butterscotch

October 28th 2010 21:00

I had always thought Butterscotch was feisty. Here was a cat who liked to bite and scratch people. I have seen many scratches on Brett’s arms, evidence of the many fights Brett has goaded Butterscotch into. The same cat bit Brett’s nephew after he forced him to play air drums with his front paws. I’ve also been bitten and pawed at the same time: Butterscotch resorted to the old feline trick of lying on the ground and showing his belly. I made the mistake of stroking it and was instantly trapped; teeth and claws were on my hand. I had to slowly get him to release me.

So I was surprised to see Butterscotch flee whenever Gingersnap has picked a fight with him.

When I asked Brett about this, he said Butterscotch was scared of Gingersnap.

“He annoys Gingersnap and when Gingersnap decides to fight back, Butterscotch knows he has gone too far and backs off,” explained Brett.

I think there is more to this. Why else would Butterscotch always yowl and then flee from the scene as if he was terrified?

“A few days ago Butterscotch was in the backyard. I went to stroke him and he growled at me. I looked up and saw a black cat. Butterscotch then chased it. He’s very territorial,” said Brett.

Blind Alley cat

October 27th 2010 21:00

Being extremely myopic (my optometrist once told me I had 20/2 vision) my sister likes to nickname me the Blind Alley. Which leads to the topic of the cat statue that is outside the State Library of NSW.

I remember my sister mentioning the statue to me several months ago but I forgot all about it until I had to attend a work conference at the State Library. I was on my way back to work with one of my colleagues following from behind when all of a sudden he pointed the statue out to me.

“Where?” I asked, looking around.

“Right behind you. Behind the fountain.”

“I can’t see anything. I’m hopeless with stuff like this. Give me some pointers.”

“See that window? It’s right underneath it on the ledge.”

I looked again. All I saw was some black fuzzy thing in the distance. Apparently that was the cat.

In a hurry, I told him I would have a closer look later on.

Several days later I happened to be going past the State Library when I remembered the cat. I went towards the area my colleague mentioned and there it was. I took some photos. I also noticed paw prints nearby so I took photos of them as well. How sweet. Some lucky cat has been immortalised.

Not Happy Jan

Some days it does not pay to be a cat. Yesterday, I opened up the Daily Telegraph only to be greeted by a story about a little girl who flushed a kitten down the toilet HERE .

The Ruined Book

October 18th 2010 21:00
I am so annoyed. I was walking around the neighbourhood one night after work. Armed with my new Erin Hunter book
HERE, I dropped it on the ground by accident. The book now has tears on the dust jacket and scratches and bumps on the bottom of the cover.

I Don’t Like That cat!”

October 14th 2010 21:00
Walking around the ‘hood with Fred the caretaker one afternoon, he had to stop at a building to quickly run an errand. I decided to stay outside and read my book, which happened to be about a cat without eyes called Homer HERE.

In case you think this book is written along the lines of this-poor-disabled-cat, rather than focusing on what he can’t do, author Gwen Cooper chooses to focus on his special abilities. I know, a lot of books about specific cats like to say how special they are (just think of Dewy and Cleo). What sets Homer apart from all the others is how effectively he can navigate the world sans eyes. His talents include being a guard cat (he foiled a burglary by scratching the thief’s face) and surviving 9/11.

Browsing in a bookstore one day, I found a book about various hazards humans can encounter. One of them was the humble botfly. Or, not so humble. Botflies are those horrible flies that lay eggs on human skin. The larvae hatch and burrow under the skin and stay there for eight weeks when it is ready to drop off. The thought of having a maggot inside me sends shivers up my spine.
