November 30th 2010 21:04

Spotted in Sydney’s Chinatown: Some lovely Christmas decorations. It’s times like this which make me love Christmas.

The Poor Birman

November 29th 2010 21:00

I can’t stop thinking about the missing Birman. Coming home last night, I noticed someone had taken the poster down. I couldn’t help but keep my eyes and ears open for the cat but I have not seen anything. The thought of the cat being scared makes me sad. I even feel like sending the owner a text message, wishing them all the best in their search for their loved one. I would sign it off with a Cat Lover. On the other hand, if the cat is still missing, I don’t want to give the owner false hope. Imagine how agonising it must feel especially if you don’t get many phone calls or text messages: You hear the beep as the mobile goes off. You race for the phone. You hope that this is it: the message saying someone has found your cat. And then you open up the message only to see that someone is merely hoping you would find it.

I wonder if Brett went through this when Butterscotch went missing. I somehow doubt it as Brett gets many phone calls every day.

The Desperate Search for a cat mug

November 28th 2010 21:00

This sounds crazy. Out shopping one day, I spied a cute dog mug. After thinking about it for a few minutes, I decided to get it. The person behind the counter said he did have a cat mug but had sold it a few days before. He also happened to mention he had seen these mugs in another store near Canberra but I didn’t pay too much attention to that as I was sure I had seen them at Paws a While, a Sydney CBD store that specialises in animal themed gifts.

My next stop was, of course, Paws a While. My search revealed that while they used to stock this particular brand of mug, they hadn’t done so for a year.

No worries, I thought, I could always shop online. A quick Google led me to the manufacturer’s website which had photos of many other equally gorgeous products. Unfortunately, it did not say how I could purchase their items but it did mention they had stores overseas.

Okay, so this wasn’t going to be as straightforward as I first thought. A day later, I went back to the store where I bought the dog mug. The person behind the counter was different. She gave me the name of the person who served me and told me when he would be in. She also gave me the name of the distributor of the cat and dog mugs. I called the distributor, hoping they could tell me where I could buy the cat mug. Unfortunately, they couldn’t without a bar code. I went back to the store and got the bar code. The distributor then told me they no longer carried this particular style.

By this point, I was ready to give up. But I decided to return to the store and ask the man who sold me the mug where he had seen the feline version. He couldn’t remember the name of the store but told me it was located in Berrima. “It’s the only dog and cat themed shop there,” he said.

Googling revealed nothing. I then started calling a few gift shops in the area. That was when I got lucky: the person who answered the phone at La Di Da told me there was a shop called Bow Meow which had just opened. I searched the White Pages and bingo!

I have placed my order and am eagerly waiting the delivery of my mug. Check it out here HERE

Missing cat

November 25th 2010 21:00

Far out! First Higgins carks it, then I start having problems dealing with people and then I come home to be greeted by a missing cat flyer on the main gate. Being the good citizen I am, I took down the details just in case I happened to find the poor Birman. I also hoped no one would tear it down.

Stupid People

November 23rd 2010 21:00

To take my mind off the death of Higgins, I rang up Fred and we started having a bitch session about stupid people. Like me, Fred has no patience with stupid people or stupid questions. One of our pet hates is being asked how we are. For example, on the day Higgins died, I had been walked and reading while I was on my way to work. Despite what most people think, I can read and see my surroundings at the same time so I have never bumped into anyone. I heard an old man calling out to me. I tried to ignore him but he kept trying to get my attention so finally I stopped to see what he wanted. “Do you know where you are going?” he asked. I gave him a filthy look and took off. I felt like saying, “Don’t waste my f*cken time asking me f*cking stupid questions when I’m in a hurry to work.”

In Mourning

November 22nd 2010 21:00

It was one sad funeral. My ex-neighbour bought a black and white box for a coffin and curled Higgins up into a ball before placing him inside the box. She also crossed his front paws. (“It was his favourite position,” she explained to me between sobs.) She opened the box and I had a look. At first, all I could see was black – black fur, black feathers, black inner box, black darkness. I moved closer and touched my old friend. He was stiff but not cold – just room temperature. It was almost as if he wasn’t dead at all; if it wasn’t for the fact his body lacked warmth, I would have sworn Higgins had fallen asleep in the box as cats love to do.

Feline Funeral

November 21st 2010 21:00

I don’t like morning SMSes. Normally, only Brett SMSes me before 8am and that’s when he is working odd hours. To get an early SMS from anyone else is normally bad news and today was no different: Fred messaged me to tell me one of my ex-neighbour’s cats was put to sleep yesterday and she had asked him to bury her cat in her friend’s garden.

Playing the Game

November 18th 2010 21:00

Out in the suburbs one day, I decided to do what any bookworm would do and head to the closest book store and have a look. It didn’t take me long to find a cat book to buy. I paid for it and later realised the guy had given me ten dollars extra in change. By then, I was back home and it was too late to go back. That said, would I or should I go back?
