Quirky Folk - February 2011

Cat Versus Dog (And the Cat Wins!)

February 28th 2011 21:00

It was bound to happen. In fact, now that it has happened I wonder why I never thought about it before. Yep. The GTC got almost got into a fight with a dog.

Walking home one day, I heard some barking coming from the stairs that are just outside the GTC’s house. I looked up and saw a small white dog on a lead, barking madly while its owner kept pulling on the leash, urging the dog to follow him. I looked around and saw the GTC standing at the side. Instead of adopting the scaredy cat position, she simply stood there and bared her teeth at the dog. The last time I saw those teeth was the time I nearly got bitten. The look on her face said, “Go ahead. Make my day.”

Finally, the owner managed to get the dog to move but the GTC literally stood her ground. I would have gone up to say hello to her but since this cat suffers from redirected aggression, I would have become her next victim.

My new Tabby Friend

February 27th 2011 21:00

Cats seem to be everywhere these days. While Fred and I went in search of Sasha the Pussycat (who, as usual, was nowhere to be seen), we then came across this lovely tabby a few blocks away. It was happy to sniff my finger and roll on its back for Fred to stroke its stomach but when it came to other forms of human contact or being photographed, it shied away from us.

It was then Fred mentioned how often he has noticed that cats dislike being photographed. That reminded me of Gingersnap and other cats who have refused to let me capture their image for eternity. If Fred has noticed this behaviour, it must be more commonplace than I thought.

Cats never fail to amaze me. This proof that cats are not stupid. Show this to anyone who dares say otherwise:

Visiting Rights

February 23rd 2011 21:00
Telling Fred about my calendar shopping sprees (see previous post), Fred said, “It might be cheaper to get your own cat. Here’s an idea: Tell a friend who has a cat that you want visiting rights. You will even pay them for the right to see their cats as long as it is a time that is convenient for you.”

Hmmm…Not a bad idea. Maybe I should suggest that to Brett, whose boys are still at the boarding house. At the rate Brett is going with finding a new place to rent and given how tight the Sydney rental market currently is, it could be months or even years before I see them again. By that stage, they might not even recognise me.

Calendar Frenzy

February 22nd 2011 21:00

Now that we are into 2011, calendar prices have dropped. And I mean, really dropped. Popping into Calendar Club one day for yet another browse, I noticed the prices had dropped from 40% off to a massive 70% off. I went in search for some more calendars and bought one. I then returned the next day to buy some more.

Man Kills Leopard

February 21st 2011 21:00

During the massive coverage of the Queensland floods, I spotted this small news item: a beautiful leopard was shot in Mumbai after it attacked a man HERE.

Another new Feline pal

February 20th 2011 21:00

Spotted while I was near Fred’s place: is this a black cat? Or is it a brown cat? Oh, it’s both. But unlike my other feline friends, this one’s shy and doesn’t like to be stroked. While it is happy to come to me, it doesn’t want me approaching it. Never mind. It’s still a beautiful puss.

This sounds like my kind of place. A bar that welcomes dogs: bring it on!

Bliss!

February 16th 2011 21:00

After taking the shot of Swizzle sleeping on someone’s car, I spotted another feline pal several metres behind me. I tried to take a decent photo of it but, like most cats, it refused to co-operate; its only interest was in approaching me and sniffing my bags.

Swizzle’s new Resting Place

Ahh, to be a cat and to have nothing to worry about except where to sleep next. Here’s my ginger pal, Swizzle, taking a nap on someone’s car.

New Henry Cats Acquisitions

February 14th 2011 21:00

My quest to buy more Henry Cats products has finally been realised by the below acquisitions. The trouble was, the two stores that I buy Henry Cat products from could not get anything in with the below designs. They advised me to buy online. Not trusting the internet (and besides, the sites were in Japanese and Korean), I found a place in Chinatown that would do it. But here’s the catch: they charge two to three times more than the other shops. On the other hand, the people who work there can read and speak Japanese and Korean, and I am basically paying them to take on the risk of purchasing from the net instead of me having to wear it.

Lessons in Camouflage

February 8th 2011 21:00

Now that I’m getting close to hitting forty, my eye sight is deteriorating. Ditto Brett, who has always had 20/20 vision. It’s funny seeing both of us wearing glasses – me for my myopia while Brett wears them because he is long-sighted.

I’m in mourning again. This time it is over the deaths of 100 dogs that were killed due to the slump in Canadian tourism after the 2010 Winter Olympics had finished HERE. This is so typical of us humans. What do you do with something that has served its purpose and is of no value anymore? Throw it out or, in this case, kill it. Brilliant! I wish I had thought of that first.
