Swizzle Finally Shows its Face

March 31st 2011 21:00

No wonder they say never work with children or animals. For weeks, I have tried to capture Swizzle’s sweet feline face. It’s been a next-to-impossible task due to the fact Swizzle is almost always asleep when I find it. When Swizzle is not asleep, it tries to approach me, making it hard to get a proper photo. Finally, when I manage to get Swizzle awake and not approaching me, it will turn its head away from the camera, just like another feline, Gingersnap. What is with cats and their cameraphobia?

Finally, after many bad shots, I managed to get a photo of Swizzle’s face. I am proud of my efforts.

The Careless Kitten

March 30th 2011 21:00

This is yet another addition to my ever-growing library. This is a story about why kittens outgrow the mucking-around stage they all go through. That explains the sudden change in Butterscotch and Gingersnap’s behaviour.

When I first met these boys, they were just leaving kittenhood and entering cathood. I remember how difficult it was to take photos of them: Butterscotch loves to paw the camera strap. In the end, I would have to hide the strap inside the palm of my hand if I was ever to get a photo of them. They would also engage in kitty wrestling matches and would knock things over in the middle of the night, much to Brett’s annoyance.

Now that they are adult cats, they don’t engage in any of these activities. All they do is lie there, purr and sleep, just like the cat in The Careless Kitten book.

Mouse Versus cat Versus dog

Check this out: how cute is this? For once, the three enemies have joined forces, proving the three can be civil to one another. That said, the cat looks about as happy as the Grouchy Tuxedo Cat. Is it possible the three were forced to pose together? In that case, why didn’t they separate? Or did the photographer happen to snap the photo before hell broke loose?

It’s true though: one of my colleagues once told me you seldom see a surly dog; the opposite can be said of cats. There’s something about them which reveals how much they are having a bad day.

The Joy of Giving

March 21st 2011 21:00

Ever since I have become acquainted with two lovely felines otherwise known as Butterscotch and Gingersnap, I have been asking my friends to stop buying me presents for my birthday. If they want to spend money, I ask for it to be donated to the RSPCA or the Cat Protection Society. So far, this has not happened. I still get presents in the form of books.

My feline library continues to grow. To compensate, I recently donated some old clothes and shoes to my local charity. Feeling noble, I went to one bookstore that I knew was having a sale. There I spotted Creature by Andrew Zuckerman. I had no intention of buying it since it was not limited to Butterscotch’s species. I then made the mistake of flicking through it. About halfway into the book were some photos of a white Sphynx cat.

Frustration

March 14th 2011 21:00

While shopping at Target just before the school holidays was about to end, I noticed some Rachael Hale cat diaries. I went to browse at another section and when I came back, they were gone.

The GTC’s new Resting Place

March 13th 2011 21:00

Now that it’s hot, I see the Grouchy Tuxedo Cat about twice a day: On the way to the city and on the way back home. There’s not much action coming from her, though. Most of the time she can be found basking in the sun. This is one of her current favourite resting spots:

R.I.P. Jane Burton

March 10th 2011 21:00

As an owner of about thirty cat books, renowned animal photographer Jane Burton’s work is featured prominently in most of them. I must admit I was never a big fan of her work (sorry!) – I found her photos too grainy and not “pretty” enough. Mind you, I was comparing her to the Queen of Cute Animal Photography AKA Rachael Hale. That was until I flicked through a copy of Kittens and Kittens, and A Cat’s Life. My heart soared and I quickly became a fan; both volumes contained photos that were not in my cat books. They should have been called The Best of Jane Burton as they truly showcase the highlights of her photographic career.

Stupid Comments

March 7th 2011 21:00

“I don’t get why people just don’t mind their own business,” I whined to Fred after getting into an argument with a stranger. “Especially about me walking and reading. When I was on holidays, I saw a couple of people doing the same thing. I felt like asking them if they get people making comments about it.”

Videos of cats Eating Pizza

March 6th 2011 21:00

Late one Friday, while my colleague had five minutes to kill before he had to catch his train, he showed me these two clips on Youtube. Bless him. Watching them made me crave for pizza, particularly after a flyer for the prawn and fetta special had landed in my mailbox just the day before. It’s nice to know Butterscotch’s relatives like pizza, too. Actually, the cats in the clips reminded me of my ex-neighbour’s cats Higgins and Miggins, who liked to jump on the dining table and try to share meals with her. She would shoo them away and tell them to eat ‘their’ food. She used to say, “They’ll eat anything.” I wonder if Butterscotch and Gingersnap are the same; the times when I have been at Brett’s while he has made dinner, I haven’t seen either of them nearby.

What to do on a Boring day

March 3rd 2011 21:00

It’s a boring day and for once in your life, you have nothing to do. Do you a) put the garbage out, b) watch some TV or c) sketch Butterscotch?

One Skittish Cat

March 1st 2011 21:00
Fred is continuing in his quest to find the elusive Sasha the Pussycat. I marvel at his determination; after months of zero sightings of Pepe, I have long given up on this cat.

As usual, we could not locate Sasha. We did, however, locate a small tabby cat a few streets away.
