Sugar Eating Parrots

May 31st 2011 21:00

This so not right: feeding parrots sugar.

Sitting at the Museum of Contemporary Art café with some friends, two parrots kept flying over to our table. They would come up to the small glass that held sugar packets, grab one with its beak before flying off. This happened twice before we started wondering what they did with them.

When they came back a third time, one of my friends ripped open a packet and poured the sugar on his hand. He held it out and the parrots hopped on and started nibbling away.

“It can’t be good for them,” said my other friend as my first friend continued feeding them.

In the end, we shooed them away.

“I didn’t know parrots like sugar,” I said.

“You can make animals eat anything,” said my second friend. I doubt it; I still remember the time I tried to get my ducks to drink Coca Cola. They took one sip before shaking their heads the same way a dog does after a bath. This was to get the Coke out of their bills before they waddled away in disgust.

ING Fridge Magnet

May 30th 2011 21:00

My property manager called to tell me he wants to do an inspection before he puts my unit on the market. So I am working hard to keep the place clean and tidy. Part of this involves cleaning the fridge. Not that I think he would be looking inside but you never know. That was when I dug up this old fridge magnet which I had forgotten all about even though it was literally in my face every time I went to open the fridge. See? This is proof I had a love affair with felines all along.

Back in the day when my landlady had no intention of selling the unit I am currently renting, she was dead keen on getting repairs done.

“They’re not major,” I said to the property manager. “I just thought I’d let you know the blinds are getting rusty.”

“She wants them replaced,” he said.

Ok. In came the tradie and out came the blinds. Next up was the mould in the bedroom wardrobe. Then came the hot water tank.

“Queenie must be having affairs with all these tradies she has coming to her home,” teased one of my colleagues.

Ha ha. Very funny.

“They have weird names,” I said. “One of them’s called Rwanda and the other’s called Simba.”

My colleague burst out laughing. “Simba – as in the lion!”

Speaking of lions, many people have told me Butterscotch looks like a one, including Brett. It’s hard to say when he’s so small but yes, he does have that yellow coat.

Here’s a question for you philosophers out there: If you have a Facebook friend who has unrestricted access to a mutual Facebook friend’s profile that you don’t, is it okay for you to view the friend’s profile through his account?

How can Anyone be so Vague?

Hanging out with Fred one day, he made the mistake of mentioning he had seen a small article about a website that has pictures of cats that look like Hitler.

Flatmates?

May 11th 2011 21:00

To shut Brett up once and for all about his money problems, I suggested us getting a place together. That way, we could save rent and be with the boys. Between the two of us, a two bedder would be much more affordable.

The Story of Ugly

May 3rd 2011 21:00

I came across this sad tale in a book called Psychic Cats by Theresa Cheung. Growing up in a rough neighbourhood, a pre-pubescent child ends up in the wrong crowd: a gang of juvenile delinquents who delight in torturing a cat that had no tail and had sores on its head. The child threw stones at the cat, which the cat dodged. Even then, the cat would come up to them, wanting to be stroked.

Cards Galore

Rachael Hale, you are driving me broke! Along with the books, calendars, stationery are the cards. At $4.50 a pop, they’re not cheap if you’re buying several of them.
