Quirky Folk - August 2011

My Sweet Girl

August 31st 2011 21:00

Now that it’s getting warmer, the GTC can be seen almost every day sunning in the same spot. She’s also getting plump. Look how sweet she looks in this photo, gazing at me with her catty yellow eyes.

I even got a miaow from her the other day which is good as she seldom talks to me these days. In fact, most of the time she’s asleep. I take advantage of that by stroking her back but I keep an eye on her just in case she wakes up and gives me a bite.

The Tailless Tortie is Back

August 30th 2011 21:00

It looks like the GTC has a new neighbour, whether she likes it or not. The Tailless Tortie now hangs around the same gate but she gives the GTC a wide berth. This does not surprise me as the GTC is well known in the neighbourhood for her bad temper and standing her ground when dogs bark at her.

Apart from the time the TT came up to me and sniffed my toe, I have not had any physical contact with this cat. I’m being patient; heck, it took several months before my ex-neighbour’s shy Bombay cats would come near me.

“You have to let them come to you,” said my ex-neighbour.

So I’m content just to look at her from the other side of the fence. I do hope we can become friends.

When Queenie purchased her first property, a one bedroom unit in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, she decided to replicate a Borders store as her way of home decorating.

The move must have been serendipitous, as Borders was closing down. Saddened by the loss of her favourite store, Queenie purchased one of their double sided bookcases and bought as much Borders paraphernalia as she could. They came in the form of the subject headings that are attached to the shelves and the signs that are on top and the side of the bookcase. She then used it to house her collection of six hundred books, most of which were purchased from Borders and still had the price stickers on them. For the finishing touches, she added a Borders enviro bag and decorated the bookcase with various Borders flyers and coupons she had collected over the years. She also included copies of their gift card policy changes.

Friends who have seen the bookcase say they feel transported back in time and it relives their Borders shopping experiences. In fact, one friend said all she needs to do is to hire a Borders employee just to complete the experience.

It’s been over a month since Borders has closed and I hate to admit it, but life goes on.

I had waited until the last Borders store closed before venturing back to Bondi Junction to get a particular cat book. I swore that I would spend all my weekends at Borders until they went before going anywhere else.

I Wish I had This Problem…

August 4th 2011 21:00

As a new home owner, I now read Domain, the Sydney Morning Herald’s property section, each week to get the goss on the Sydney property market. I also like reading the problem letters. Last Saturday’s edition had a scorcher of a problem: how does one tell their neighbour that their cat is doing poos in their yard? The agony aunt’s suggestions included cat-proofing the backyard by putting mulch or pebbles on the garden-bed or keeping plants such as lavender to repel the cat or gently letting the owner know what the cat has been up to. This is my suggestion: deal with it.
