Quirky Folk - November 2011

Backed Into a Corner

November 30th 2011 21:00

The beauty of living in a good neighbourhood means that almost every time my intercom rings, it’s someone I know. Until last Sunday night that is.

I answered it, thinking it was Brett who decided to drop by unannounced. Okay, you could say that is unusual. But not impossible, especially when I haven’t seen him for about a month.

Instead, I got a stranger on the other end. Very polite but a stranger nevertheless.

For some reason, I went outside to see who he was. He handed me a business card and explained he was the property manager for a unit in my building. The tenant had vacated it but left the keys in the unit. He even showed me an email from the alleged tenant on his smart phone just to prove he was legit.

But something niggled at me and made me hesitate. Just then, he decided to have a go at me. “Well, if you’re going to be like this, I will just keep ringing the intercoms until someone lets me in.”

I walked off. But all of a sudden, I spun around in a fit of anger. Like an animal that had been backed into a corner, I took the attitude of if you want to fight, let’s have a fight.

Next thing I knew, I went back to him and started yelling at him. “I don’t know who you are so I have a right to hesitate before letting you in. How would you like it if I turned up at your place demanding to be let in when you don’t know me from a bar of soap? And there’s no need to get angry. If you don’t leave me alone, I will call the police!”

“Call the police!” he yelled back as I walked off.

It was not until about fifteen minutes later that I realised why I was so hesitant about letting him in: If he was the property manager, he should have a spare set of keys. Not only that, his business card did not have a photo on it so it didn’t mean anything. Nor did his business card mention he was a property manager. But what really did it was how he suddenly turned on me; if he was legitimate then he would understand my hesitation.

2011 cat Diary

November 29th 2011 21:00

No, that is not a typo. I know, the year is almost over and I just spent a dollar buying a 2011 cat diary. What for? For the picture, of course!

I’ve put it in my bedroom and every time I look at it, it seems to brighten up my day.

That said, it’s amazing what people would buy. I remember when during Borders’ closing down sale there were 2010 diaries for sale.

“Why would anyone buy a 2010 diary?” I heard a woman say to her boyfriend as she went through the stationery pile. “It’s all junk, anyway.” She then walked off.

To me, it just showed how desperate Borders was to get every cent they can from their closing down sale. It’s now been several months since they have shut down and I still miss them. I’m sure Westfield does as well.

New Jetoy Supplier

November 28th 2011 21:00

Remember Bang!, the shop with no signage? Several weeks after my post about their lack of signage, they put up signs on both sides of their corner store, letting people know what they are called. My sister will be pleased as she has often wanted to know what the name of their shop was.

It also turns out they stock Jetoy products. Recently, they have little cat cards for a princely sum of $2.50 each. Since I was planning on buying several of them, I decided to haggle. I asked if the sales person could give me a better price if I decided to buy in bulk.

“How many?” he asked.

I plucked a figure from my head. Ten? Twenty? No, I already had some of the designs on other Jetoy products I had purchased. I decided to stick with ten for the meantime.

“That’s not bulk,” he said. “Bulk is one hundred.”

I went back to shuffling the card pile, trying to decide whether it would be better for me just to buy the whole lot. There must have been a hundred cards in that pile anyway.

The sales person said he could give me a 40% discount if I purchased a hundred of them.

Since I have a mortgage to pay, I decided to just buy four at a time, even though technically, I was ripping myself off. On the other hand, I didn’t have to pay for the ones with designs I already had so it might work out better for me anyway.

“It’s like how I buy American jelly beans,” said my sister, who likes to select her own flavours rather than just buying a box of mixed flavours. “It might work out to be more expensive but because I’m only buying flavours I like, there’s no waste.”

When my best friend Andrea and I were teenagers, we liked to give colours more descriptive names.

The Millipede Killing

November 8th 2011 21:00

Urgh. Several weeks after finding a caterpillar near my front door, I was having a spring clean when I discovered a large millipede in my bedroom. Given that my floorboards are the colour of Lindt dark chocolate, I was surprised to discover it at all.

Talk About Brazen

November 1st 2011 21:00

After purchasing my Rachael Hale the cat bookmark (see previous post), I decided to have a browse at Target, which is always a good place to see some new Rachael Hale merchandise. It turned out all they had were some kitten tote bags and a kitten diary.
