A Cat Lover’s Guide to Dating
July 6th 2009 21:01
Another day, another dollar, another water cooler discussion. Today’s topic was cyber versus traditional dating. My colleagues and I were against cyber dating, citing the usual reasons: they wanted to be able to touch the person as opposed to web camming them, they wanted to get to know the person properly, go on a proper date with them and so on.
That led to a conversation about how to meet people. One colleague suggested attending events you are interested in, sussing out the regulars and then trying to get to know them. “That’s how I met my wife,” he said.
“Yeah, like a cat club,” I said.
My colleagues burst out laughing. One of them said, “All you have to do is go to a pet shop, stand outside and you will meet plenty of people. Or you can go to the RSPCA. See if anyone goes there to drop a cat off and then you can start talking to them.”
“Yeah, as in ‘Why are you abandoning this cat?’”
Despite their jokes, my colleagues have a point. Animal lovers like me should try and meet other animal lovers. So I could try the pet shop, RSPCA, cat and dog shows, the zoo, talking to dog walkers in the park…the possibilities are endless. My ex-neighbour is always talking to people who are out walking their dogs. When my sister and I used to go on late night walks we used to talk to this guy called Rod who used to walk five dogs. One of them was a black pug who liked to come up and grunt at me. Maybe I should start going out for late night walks again. Who knows? Rod and I might really hit it off this time.

Fictional Worlds
That's very true-animal lovers need other animal lovers (preferrably not the kind that love animals but are allergic, or at least not SEVERELY allergic. Minor allergies are usually ok) but I must say something about internet dating.
My aunt and uncle met via an internet dating site and are now living together with two kids.
Personally I think that meeting someone online isn't that bad-if they live in or close to your city so you can actually meet them in person more easily. If they live in another country or across the country that's another matter entirely; but if they live nearby, it's fine to meet them via the internet-you just have to be careful.

I agree. That's how my best friend Andrea met her husband Luke. But you can never be too careful - there are all kinds of weirdos out there and with the anonymity of the internet, you really don't know who you are dealing with until you meet them face to face.
Thanks for dropping by.
