Animal Farm and Peter Singer

After finishing Peter Singer’s Animal Liberation, I decided to re-read Animal Farm. I have not read this novel for over twenty years but I am really enjoying it. Singer’s book appears to be the non-fiction version of the Orwellian classic so it was only natural to pick up the Orwell book after finishing Singer’s. I have just finished the first chapter and cannot believe there were so many anti-human sentiments expressed by the animals. Just the sort of book a misanthrope would really enjoy!
As I mentioned a couple of posts ago, I am trying to cut down on my meat consumption. What surprised me was how quickly I have started; last weekend I went to the supermarket and was in the deli. I ordered my usual lot of triple smoked ham but, without thinking, I asked for a smaller quantity. I have also stopped eating eggs. I feel guilty for buying cage eggs instead of free range ones but this was back in my pre-animal liberation days. As Singer says towards the end of Animal Liberation, there is no point in trying to undo the wrongs of the past; we can only try to change the future.
