Animal Farm Revisited
June 24th 2010 21:00
Okay, so I was wrong. A few posts ago I said Animal Farm was the fiction equivalent to Peter Singer’s Animal Liberation. The reason I wrote this was because both books say animals are equal to humans and should be set free from a life mostly spend in misery as farm animals. That was when I was at the start of Animal Farm. Halfway through the novel, I could see how it was going to end: the pigs would take over the farm. I kept hoping this wouldn’t happen but alas, it did and I felt the ending only reinforced human prejudices against animals, especially the part that said animals such as ducks were stupid while the pigs were more intelligent. What did surprise me, though, was how the pigs not only ended up behaving but also dressing like humans.
That said, I still enjoyed reading it.
