One afternoon, a colleague’s mobile started ringing. The ring tone was of an old beer commercial from the eighties. Everyone looked up and wondered whose phone it was.
This led to a discussion about unusual ring tones. Animal lover me, suggested a cat’s miaow would do fine, thank you very much. I then miaowed several times for effect.
“How about the purr?” asked another colleague. Spot on! Ooh, that would be nice. I could tape Gingersnap (who has the loudest purr of any cat I know) and use it as my mobile ringtone. Or I could have a bird’s song, a lion’s roar or a quacking duck. In fact, any animal sound would probably be good except for maybe, hyenas. They make such a God-awful shriek. In wildlife documentaries, they always sound like they are laughing.
Speaking of quacking ducks, I once saw a duck with a really loud quack at this wildlife reserve I used to visit. The duck sounded like it was in agony. After watching it for a while I noticed it had a sore foot and it would avoid putting pressure on it. On one occasion, it went for a swim before stopping at the top of the sand to take a rest. It accidentally put pressure on its foot and let out this huge painful quack. I never saw – or heard – that duck again so hopefully it had gotten some veterinary attention.
