Animals in the Office
October 19th 2010 21:00
I have been transferred to a new team at work. Some of us like to make animal noises late in the afternoon when no one else is around.
After an animal noise too many, one of my team members said, “I’m working with a bunch of animals here.”
“That’s a compliment,” said one of my animal-loving colleagues.
“Same here,” I agreed.
Naturally, this led to a discussion about human versus animal violence.
“Animals may kill each other or be violent but at least there’s a reason behind it,” said my colleague.
“I agree. Even when male animals kill the babies who are fathered by others in their group, it’s so they can mate with the female to ensure their genes will be passed on to the next generation. Animals aren’t violent for no reason or just to get some kicks like humans are.” When I said that, I was in the middle of reading a book about animal cruelty. I was horrified to read about a kitten that was set alight while some youths laughed while he cried in pain. Ditto the dog that was run over and left to die on the road. A neighbour had witnessed the accident and had put the dog in his garage and waited for the owner to come home so he could gently break the news to her.
My colleague asked if she could borrow the book but I had to knock her back as I have lent stuff to people in the past and have not gotten it back which is why I never lend things to people anymore – especially my animal books.
