Okay, here’s the deal. I work in finance. Part of my work involves attending training sessions to ensure my knowledge is up to date.
At one meeting, a lawyer started telling me about how he almost completed his medical degree before he decided he didn’t want to pursue a medical career after all and switched to law. I was instantly captivated; a career in medicine had been something I had always been interested in although as I am getting older, I am becoming more and more sensitive to gore.
“Have you had any training in anatomy?” the lawyer asked me.
“No, but I have seen autopsies on TV,” I replied.
“And did the gore bother you?”
“Nope.”
“What branch of medicine would you be interested in?”
“Autopsies. I want to do autopsies for a living.”
He then said something along the lines of getting more familiar with anatomy and autopsies before deciding whether or not it was worth me doing medicine. That reminded me of what my doctor told me; he had recommended me seeing as many autopsies as possible. The only problem was this was not possible due to legal considerations.
“I’d like to be a surgeon,” laughed one of the participants. “Would you like to cut him up?”he asked me, indicating Butterscotch.
“No!” I said.
“Which would you rather cut open: a human or a cat?”
“A human, of course.”
“You mean to say that a cat is more important than a human?”
I couldn’t answer that at first but upon further reflection, yes. Firstly, I have little interest in veterinary medicine so there would be no point cutting a cat up. Secondly, humans choose to donate their bodies to science so they have already given their consent to be cut up. A cat can’t.
I finally said that to the second man and he appeared bewildered about the fact I seemed to have placed so little value on human life.
