Another Stressful day out Shopping

October 23rd 2011 21:00

Regular readers of this blog would probably be under the impression that I enjoy shopping, if the number of cat books I have bought over the years is anything to go by (no pun intended). Actually, I don’t. Like many consumers who are jumping onto the online ship, I am getting fed up with the poor or lack of service in traditional bricks and mortar shops. I also hate it when sales assistants monitor your movements. For example, one lady decided to pick a fight with me over the fact I had tried on an outfit twice in her shop. She claimed that I had tried it on four times and had come into her shop every single week over a two month period. None of it was true and even if it was, so what? I did what my psychologist friend calls the silent protest by turning on my heel and walking out. I also made a complaint to the shopping centre.

The only store I liked was Borders because of the huge selection and mostly helpful staff, although I did notice some of them did become surly during their final week of operation.

“Well, they’re mad because they’re about to lose their jobs so they take it out on the customers knowing that there’s not much they can do as soon there will be no one to complain to,” said Fred. “It’s not like they can ring head office.”

This brings me to my stressful day at a shopping centre.

I had just sat down at a table for four people at the food court when, a split second later, a woman plonks herself diagonally opposite me. My sister was about to sit down when this woman started yelling at us in broken English. Her English was so poor we could barely understand what she was saying but we did catch the word family. I was about to leave (as I’m the sort of person who can’t be bothered getting into fights with people over trivial matters) when my sister literally stood her ground and started yelling back at her, saying something along the lines of “This is seating for the public, not for one person so you will have to share with others. You can stay seated but I am not going to move.” She then plonked herself down. People were looking but we didn’t care: If she wanted to make a fool out of herself we were more than happy to come to the party. The woman got up and sat at another table.

We watched her for a few minutes. All she wanted was to sit by herself for a maximum of the three minutes it took for her to drink her coffee. Gobsmacked, we marvelled at how someone could pick a fight with us over something so trivial.

I then went to use the ladies. Someone had peed all over the toilet seat. I only noticed when I sat down. Wonderful. And they say animals are dirty? No wonder I hate people.
