After my mini burko at Woolworths (see previous post), I headed off to the Kinokuniya book store. Needless to say, terms such as anti-social personality disorder, conduct disorder and Asperger syndrome were heavily on my mind. In the psychology section I found a book that was aptly titled Antisocial Personality Disorder: A Practitioner's Guide to Comparative Treatments (Comparative Treatments for Psychological Disorders) by Frederik Rotgers PsyD ABPP. Talk about serendipity!
I flicked through it, stopping at the case study of Frank, an adult male who had been in trouble with the law. I quickly scanned the text and was going to flip to the next chapter when the word cat caught my eye.
According to his brother, when Frank was seven, he doused a cat with gasoline before setting it on fire. Frank watched and laughed while the cat howled in agony and his brother ran off in horror. Frank also found a frog, chopped its legs off before stuffing fire crackers in its mouth and then making it explode. After that, Frank turned his diabolical attention to humans.
Feeling very misanthropic, I spend the whole day thinking about the cat. I imagined Butterscotch being burnt to death. How many other animals are being abused right now as we speak? I don’t want to know.
