Are There Any Sections You Skip When You’re at the Zoo?

Whenever I go to the zoo with my sister, she has a list of the animals she would like to see, in order of priority. At the top of the list are animals she considers exotic and/or cute or beautiful such as sun bears, pelicans, seals and peacocks. In the middle are the zebras, lions, tigers and hippos. At the bottom are the “boring” animals (her word, not mine) such as reptiles, rodents, birds, kangaroos and koala bears. My sister’s justification for classifying such animals are being boring is that she has seen them many times and given that we spend almost every Christmas day at the zoo, she has a limited time to see all the animals. Hence her list.

At first I was shocked by her snobbery but have since understood her reasoning. While I try to see all the animals while I’m at the zoo, I too have a list. The difference is while my sister doesn’t care whether or not she sees the low priority animals, I do and I end up seeing every single animal.

My neighbour hates zoos. She finds the sight of animals in cages – even large roomy ones - distressing. I can see her point of view. On the other hand, I can also see the good zoos do in animal conservation.

What about you? Do you have a similar list when you go to the zoo or do you wander around randomly, seeing whatever takes your fancy?

<lol> nice tie-in of photo and headline

I try to visit all sections but if am short of time, I'll probably skip the reptiles...particularly the snakes

Thanks, Lara. Why do you skip the snakes?

I have to see everything. We get there really early in the morning and make sure nothing is left out! Taronga does really well for the animals there, its a lovely zoo and the animals are usually happy. I cant wait to go for the nocturnal stuff in summer!

Kleonaptra, I do the same thing too. Plus Taronga is expensive so I want to get my money's worth. I usually end up convincing my sister to see everything, too.

I try to see everything but last time at the zoo I was saddened by some of the enclosures and by how much the animals looked just out of it and resigned to a future of innocent incarceration. I fully support what zoos do with conservation so while it bothered me I will go back again. I recently went to the Sydney Wildlife Park and it was awesome!! I normally always skip the kangaroos though - I can see them while eating breakfast at my parents place. I would skip the reptiles if I needed to - they all look the same - just different colors. But it is good to see them and remember the poisonous Australian ones, it could be the reminder of which one to run from as quick as humanly possible if we ever meet in the outside world.

Jason, I also have mixed feelings about zoos. On one hand, it's great they're helping breed and home animals that might otherwise be endangered. On the other hand, it's sad to see them locked up and not free to roam in the wild. But where do you draw the line?
