Benefits of Doing Things on Your Own
October 7th 2007 22:19
Society seems to give people who like to be alone a bad name. Just look at the negative connotations associated with words such as loner, recluse, hermit, outsider, spinster. They suggest that being alone is awful and that the person must be a social outcast and incapable of forming, let alone sustaining, friendships.
It's only until recently that a neutral term for a person who likes to be alone has been coined: quikyalone.
Since childhood I have loved being alone. I have friends but I also enjoy my own company as I enjoy my independence.
Benefits of being alone include:
- You get to do what you want to;
- You don't have to worry about what someone else wants to do;
- If you are a stickler for time, you don't have to worry about someone who is running late and vice versa;
- If you like to walk fast, you don't have to worry about slowing down so your friend can catch up and vice versa;
- If you are out and about, whether it be at the shops, a club or the cinema, you can stay out as long as you like;
- If you have many errands to run, doing them on your own means you don't have to feel held up;
- You can use the time to reflect on life or the world around you;
- Sometimes solitary thinking is a good way to sort out issues in your life, especially if you feel you cannot share them with friends.
And so on. At art galleries, I can spend as much time as I want looking at paintings. I find it relaxing and a good way to spend a Sunday before getting back into the rat race the following day. For those who can't bear the thought of being alone, maybe you should try it sometime; you might learn something new about yourself.

You make some good points there, I guess being a girl is different to being a guy.
Whatever makes you happy, do it.
