Bookshop Music

November 10th 2011 21:00

One of my friends has this theory about the music in bookshops: they choose the music on whether they want you to stay or go.

“If they want you to have a long browse they would pick something non-intrusive like classical,” said Peter. “But if they play rock it’s obvious they want you to just get a book and go.”

I find this so true. How often have you been to a bookstore and you find the music so offensive or annoying that you just have to leave?

If I hear hard rock, rap or even house music while browsing for books I find it harder to concentrate reading or browsing. But if it’s something soft like classical, jazz or soul music, I find it more welcoming. Of course, I’m biased in that I’m a big follower of the latter genres but still…

That said, there are about three songs that are guaranteed to make me want to leave not just a bookstore but ANY store due to their ability to ring in my head hours after hearing them:

Out of Reach by Gabrielle

Whenever, Wherever by Shakira

Poker Face by Lady Gaga
