Borders is Still Around (Well, Sort of)

Regular readers of this blog may recall my post about spotting some bookshelves inside an empty Angus and Robertson store in Chatswood Chase a few weeks ago.
I was recently shopping in Westfield Bondi Junction with my sister. I showed her what used to be the Borders store which was now bordered up (my neighbour’s joke, ha ha) and I noticed the staff entrance wasn’t covered up. I took a closer look. Inside, I could see tables stacked on top of one another. I had shopped at Borders long enough to recognise them as being their display tables. I also noticed the Borders logo was still on the glass door.
At this point a man inside the store went outside and closed up the area so you could no longer see inside the store. My sister hissed at me for being nosy and said that was why the man was closing up the area.
“I wonder why the furniture is still in there,” I said. “The fixtures manager told me they were going to hand the keys back to Westfield the moment they ceased operation. It’s silly to be paying all this rent just to keep the furniture.” And what about the trucks I saw hauling away all the unsold bookcases on the night they finished trading? Maybe they belonged to the people who bought the larger ones.
“Maybe their lease isn’t up,” said my sister. “Or maybe they cut a deal with Westfield. You never know. Since they’re under administration, the administrators would want to get every cent they can. Maybe they’re going to sell the furniture.”
“They can always try EBay,” I suggested, feeling sad. It’s now been almost two months since Borders has closed down and I still miss them. Life will never be the same again.
