Brett’s Landlord Wants Him to Get Rid of His Cats

Butterscotch and Gingersnap

It’s every pet lover who rents’ nightmare: being told your pets are no longer welcome.

Of course it was Brett’s fault he got himself into this situation. After living in his two bedroom rented cottage for a year or so, he decided he wanted an animal in his life. He had a friend who worked at an animal shelter so Brett asked her to let him know when she came across an unwanted Siamese cat. Brett wanted a Siamese one as he grew up with one.

One day he got a call from his friend. She didn’t have any Siamese cats but would he fancy some Tonkinese (half Siamese, half Burmese) cats? Brett decided to pay the animal shelter a visit.

There they were, two brothers locked up in a cage. Their previous owner had to give them up as she was allergic to them. If Brett was interested he had to take both of them; they couldn’t be separated. Brett agreed, even though he hadn’t checked with his landlord first.

Months of domestic bliss passed by quickly. Then came the inspection. The real estate agent wasn’t happy to see Butterscotch and Gingersnap living there. Brett was told the cats had to go.

I was horrified when Brett told me.

“What are you going to do?” I asked him.

“I’m going to hide them,” he said. “Or I might leave them at a friend’s house on the day of the next inspection.”

Good call. Thank God Butterscotch and Gingersnap were only interested in scratching cardboard boxes. Brett could easily pretend he had gotten rid of them and no one would be the wiser.

“You could do what my neighbour does,” I said. “She’s trained her cats to hide in her wardrobe whenever someone knocks.” Unlike Brett’s cats though, my neighbour had to watch her cats as they liked scratching the carpet.

I wish I could be as carefree as Brett when it comes to pets but I must admit I like to go by the book. So when I plan to get a pet I will consult my landlord first. Yes, it’s a boring approach but if I am to give a home to an animal it must be a permanent one.

yeah, it is a nightmare, but luckily Brett is thinking smart! My mum doesnt like putting her cats down on applications, but I never lie. Mums cats hide when strangers are around so she says it doesnt matter, but I just feel bad for lying...Even when its easy to do.

Same here. I like to be upfront just in case there's an emergency and the landlord has to get access to my flat while I'm away and then comes across some companion animals...
