Brett’s Moving
November 9th 2010 21:00
I am so not happy. I have just found out that Brett is getting tired of paying the large amount of rent that it takes to be an Eastie and – shock, horror! – for the first time in his life, he is seriously contemplating becoming a Westie. That is so unlike him! All his friends, clients, job opportunities are in inner Sydney and the Eastern suburbs. In fact, ever since he has moved out of home, Brett has lived in the CBD/Eastern suburbs apart from a brief stint in the lower North Shore, which he hated. Why would such a diehard Eastie suddenly decide to become a Westie? No prizes for guessing: “I can get a larger place for less money with a proper backyard for Butterscotch and Gingersnap to play in if I move out west. I can always drive to see my clients,” he said.
“What about Potts Point?” I asked, in a desperate attempt to convince him to stay. P.P. is one of Brett’s favourite suburbs.
“There are no houses in Potts Point,” he replied. Okay, so he’s got me there. But I remember when Brett lived in the lower north and he absolutely hated it. “There’s no café or restaurant culture, no vibe. It’s pure suburbia,” I remember him complaining at the time.
Of course, I have a vested interest in trying to convince Brett not to move: depending on how far west he goes, it could be harder for me to see my favourite boys. Currently, they live several blocks away from me and I want it to stay that way.
Still, I could understand how Brett feels about the financial situation. When people ask me how much rent I pay to live within walking distance of the CBD, often they are horrified. “For that amount of money you could get a three bedder out west,” is what they usually say. That’s the price I pay for the luxury of not getting up at 5am so I can be at work by 8.30am.
