Brett’s Plan

January 29th 2009 21:00

I don’t know about you but I dread rental property inspections. I’m sure my fear of them comes from the time I had to let the property manager into a unit I used to rent and he took one look at the place and started shouting at me about what a grot I was.

I thought this was a little unfair because it wasn’t as if a formal inspection was taking place. It was a spur of the moment thing where the property manager called me and asked if he could have a look at something that needed repair. On the other hand, a lawyer friend once told me even if I was to let someone in just to do repairs, I should still tidy the place up just in case they would report the condition of my place to the landlord/property manager.

I had only recently just had an inspection. The property manager was happy to let himself in during the day while I was at work and I said that would be fine. In the days approaching the inspection, I naturally cleaned up the place. My friend Brett happened to be visiting so I used the opportunity to get feedback on how tidy he thought my place was and to ask him what happens during an inspection.

This led to his story about Butterscotch and Gingersnap. I had originally thought Brett was present during his latest inspection. Actually, it had turned out Brett also struck a similar deal with his property manager and was away at the time. For some reason, he didn’t think to hide Butterscotch and Gingersnap, even though he hadn’t gotten permission to have pets on the property.

So when the property manager arrived, he was greeted with the sight of two cats and lots of cat paraphernalia lying around. He later called Brett and said, “When I was there, I noticed some cats. And you had lots of cats stuff lying around, like a carrier, a scratching post…”

Brett came out with the same story my ex-neighbour gives when questioned about her cats: “Oh, I’m looking after them for a friend who’s gone on holidays.”

“When will they be back?” asked the property manager.

“In a few days. So the cats will be gone soon.” As if!

Brett plans to say this whenever he is questioned about the cats. His other plan is to hide them at a friend’s house for a few hours the next time an inspection is done. After all, the property manager can’t prove that the cats are always on the premises…

Hi Queenie, some property managers are just plain mean.

As for your friend with his lovely pusscats, my friend has his beautiful Lily at home and is not allowed to. she is scrupulously clean so whenever there is an inspection we just hide the paraphenlia and close the window that she enters through. so if the property manager sees her outside he can say she is the neighbour's cat.

Hi Cheryl

Good idea, lol.

It's amazing how clean animals are. Butterscotch and Gingersnap don't even scratch the furniture (although Gingersnap loves chewing away on Brett's cardboard boxes). They do their business in their litter box. They don't miaow or get into fights with other cats. What more can a landlord ask for?
