Butterscotch is Given a Time Limit
September 9th 2008 21:00
Now that Butterscotch is safely at home after being lost for almost a week, my friend Brett has set a time limit on how long he will be allowed outside: 15 minutes.
“How do you get him to come home?” I asked.
“I bang on the dishes and when he comes in I give him some food so he knows if he wants food he has to come home.” Like most cats, Butterscotch loves food. In particular, he enjoys ham and chicken.
I’ve seen Butterscotch in action. As soon as Brett opens the door he flies out into the courtyard. He then jumps on top of the red brick fence and will walk along it until he reaches the side which touches Brett’s cottage. From there he will leap onto the sloping roof and climb right up to the top. It is most frustrating trying to get him down. Calling his name does no good; he just ignores me. There’s no point in grabbing him as he moves so quickly he can easily evade capture. So I’m glad to hear he’s food motivated.
His brother Gingersnap, on the other hand, has slower reflexes. When Gingersnap leaps onto the fence he likes to look around. Distracted by his surroundings, it is easy for me to grab him and bring him back inside. I don’t like seeing the cats go outside because I’ve stories of how nasty people can be towards animals. Also, there is a road in front of Brett’s house and I’m always scared the cats will get run over by accident. I don’t want my beloved Tonkinese darlings to end up as statistics.
