Butterscotch Now Bites People
September 4th 2008 21:00
I’m not happy with Butterscotch at the moment. He used to be my favourite cat. That was until last Friday when I was at Brett’s house.
As usual, I was playing with him. Butterscotch came over and sniffed me and sat beside me. What a lovely cat. When Brett sat down beside me Butterscotch crawled onto his lap. How cute. Brett said that ever since Butterscotch was found after disappearing for almost a week, all he wants to do is lie on his lap. What Brett failed to mention was Butterscotch has picked up a bad habit: biting people.
So later on when I was alone, I found Butterscotch lying on a large cube-shaped seat, I went over to stroke him. Butterscotch looked happy and rolled upside down. I kept stroking me and all of a sudden Butterscotch opened his mouth and launched his jaws onto my hand. At the same time he put his front paws on my arm and unsheathed his claws. It hurt. Thank God for my neighbour! She taught me how to handle such sticky situations. “Never pull your hand away from a cat that got its claws into you, else you will end up scratched.” was what she used to always say. So although I was uncomfortable, I stayed in the same position and raised my voice at Butterscotch and said, “Gentle!” Butterscotch got the message loud and clear: moments later he let go of me.
I went back to stroking Butterscotch until the same thing happened again. I managed to get him to let go of me again but I wasn’t impressed. When Brett came back, I told him what had happened.
“He likes a good fight, don’t you Butterscotch?” was all he said. Brett grabbed the cat and put him next to him and dangled his hand in front of him. Butterscotch pounced immediately. There he was, biting and clawing at Brett. Brett didn’t seem to mind his cat’s aggression. When I pointed out to him from my reading of many cat books not to use human limbs as toys with cats, as they learn to bite and scratch people, Brett seemed to think I was crazy.
“It’s just his personality,” Brett said.
“What about Gingersnap?” I asked, referring to Butterscotch’s brother.
“Gingersnap has a different personality which is why he doesn’t bite.” Thank God for that.

Cats are NOT humans, love and intimacy are completely different things in their world. Biting means LOVE and the way he did it - rolling over, showing you his belly (submission) and grabbing your hand to scratch it and bite it means SUPREME LOVE....He doesnt just love you, he thinks you're awesome and thus, you need to be a part of his pack. Im like Brett with my Xiara - she can bite and scratch me all she wants, because to a cat its the hight of intimacy.
Its something humans forget so often when they have pets, yes, they are so like us, but asking a cat not to bite or scratch is like asking a human not to smile and hug. Its just their natural way of showing love. Be honored!
