Can you Feel the Love?

Leaving Brett’s house one morning, I happened to look down underneath his gate and noticed several names written in the concrete: TOM (that’s Brett’s teenage nephew) BRETT BUTTERSCOTCH GINGERSNAP. Ain’t love grand?
“They both like to go out,” says Brett. “Gingersnap likes to stay close to home but Butterscotch roams all over the neighbourhood. I’m not sure how far he goes but everyone who lives in my street knows him. They feed him and he comes back, well fed and happy.”
Despite Brett trying to keep them indoors, Butterscotch has figured how to open the back door. Instead of a door knob, the back door has a long horizontal handle. So if Brett doesn’t lock the door, all Butterscotch has to do is to leap up and pull the handle down and off he goes. Gingersnap will then follow.
Hanging out at Brett’s one night, I had been watching the cats. A few minutes later, when Brett went to the bathroom, I had noticed the cats had disappeared. I checked all the rooms and the top of the cupboards but they were nowhere in sight. When Brett returned, I asked if they were in the bathroom but he told me he had found the back door unlocked and that the cats had escaped. It was then he told me about Butterscotch’s trick.
