Cat Fancy Magazine

March 9th 2008 21:00
One of my cat-hating friend’s dream is to become a CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst). The same initials also stand for the Cat Fanciers’ Association so I like to rile him up by telling him cat jokes.

Now onwards. I wish, I wish Cat Fancy magazine was widely available where I live (Sydney, Australia). I can only find it at one place which is Borders bookstore and it is air freight only, meaning it ends up costing me double the price I would pay if it came via sea. It’s such an interesting magazine and has beautiful photos of my four-legged whiskered friends. In the March 2008 issue is a story on cat cruelty and cat consumption in Korea.

Today I checked out their web site and found out I can get hold of past issues via PDF. What a great idea. Firstly, the PDFs cost the same as I would pay if the magazine was shipped via sea mail. Secondly, PDFs take up less room than hardcopy. Thirdly, unlike a hardcopy, PDFs don’t fade or go mouldy. Nor do you have to worry about accidentally spilling coffee on them (only the computer).

At the moment, I think I am too selfish to devote my life to a cat (plus I need my landlord’s permission) so at least reading cat magazines let me indulge in my fantasy of having two loving companions without worrying about the responsibility. Plus I believe pets are like children; once you get one you have it for life. That seems like a great responsibility to me and one I am unwilling to take on until I am ready to settle down.

We have had cats for a while and a dog originally. We've just had a baby 4 months ago.

They're a bit different in terms of responsibility. Kids require far more attention while a cat is likely to be more self suficient while you're not there. Pets are more like having a long term friendship and if you look after them they will return the favour by being loving companions in return.

Sven, you've hit the nail on the head with the key words: long term. Unlike toys, you can't just buy a pet and think you can get rid of it when it's no longer cute (well, I know some people try to do that but I couldn't). It's a long term decision and once you factor in the price of vet visits, operations, pet food, kitty litter...they're not cheap!
