When we were young, my old man’s solicitor would come over and try to talk to us. Back then, we had no idea who he was or what he wanted. We only knew he was here to see our old man and he had no business trying to talk to us. But talk to us, he did. We never responded to his questions or his attempts to be friendly. Eventually, one day he said, “Cat got your tongue?” Again, we did not respond but this time it was more out of incomprehension rather than spite.
Years later, the solicitor had to see my old man again. As usual, he tried to be friendly. My sister still wouldn’t talk to him but I did. I realised he wasn’t so bad once I got to know him. I was embarrassed by my previous immaturity but the solicitor didn’t seem to mind.
On my sister’s prized Late Show DVD is a vox pop by Tony Martin. After asking several people a question, he then directed the same question to a dog. The dog didn’t respond so Martin points the microphone at the dog and says, “Cat got your tongue?” Whenever I see that skit, I think of him.
