Cats for Sale as Food
January 28th 2008 21:00
I had read about a cat being skinned alive in the paper and was doing a Google for more details when I stumbled across this web site which talks about cats being sold as food and for their fur.
Cat website
The images saddened and sickened me. Part of me keeps hoping what the web site is saying is false but the pictures keep reminding me it isn’t. There’s a photo of a man lifting a ginger cat out of a cage by the neck with metal tongs. Next to the photo is a caption saying that cats are for sale as food in China. I’m quite squeamish so I try to avoid eating meat (especially red meat) so when I saw that caption, I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. The other thing is, since I have Chinese heritage, growing up I copped more than my fair share of Chinese-eat-cats-and-dogs jokes but I thought it was a bunch of racist crap until I asked my parents. Yes, they said, the Chinese did use to eat cats and dogs but due to pressure from Westerners, it is now frowned upon and most Chinese people wouldn’t, especially those from younger generations. As to how commonplace cat and dog eating is in China, I can only relate to my own personal experiences. Of the many, many Chinese people I know, they certainly don’t eat cats or dogs. However, when my best friend Andrea travelled to China a few years ago, she did come across a small rural village where people did eat dogs. So it would be interesting to know how widespread the practice is but I certainly don't doubt there is cruelty to animals not just in China but worldwide.
The part that disturbs me the most is the inhumane conditions in which these animals are kept. Seeing pictures of many cats crammed into one cage is so barbaric it almost brings tears to my eyes. I feel sad enough each time one of my friends tells me about how he went to a cat shelter to adopt a cat and found them all in cages. And killing cats and dogs for their fur for the sake of vanity is so gut wrenching to think about. Even as a child, I disliked fur. I have never worn fur and never will. It’s so unnecessarily cruel on animals.

A few months ago i was looking up cat recipes, thinking of cooking up some home made meals for my kitties. When i googled ‘cat recipes’ the first hits to come up were how to skin / cook / eat cats - not the kind of 'cat recipes' i was after *vomit*
