Walking to work one morning, I noticed a homeless man with about twenty two dollar coins in his hand. He had his palm wide open and was counting his stash.

I sat down in the food court near my work place to read the paper. A few seconds later the same homeless man asked me if I had any spare change. I said no and off he went, asking others for money. As usual, I felt resentful about having my space disturbed.

“Leave me alone,” I said to myself. “I’m not a bank.”

I was telling my colleague about this when he started telling me about people asking him for money at Hungry Jacks. This led to a conversation on the ethics of giving homeless people money, especially when you know one of them already has money in his hand.

“This might sound horrible but I don’t help two legged beings,” I said. “I help those with four legs.”

“What about one legged ones?” asked my colleague.

“Nope – they’re usually humans.” With the exception of birds, of course.

“Animals can have one leg.”

“Yeah, right. Have you ever seen a one legged cat?”
