Colin the Whale is Finally Euthenased/The Incredible Four-Eared Cat
August 22nd 2008 00:23
What a week it’s been for animals in the news. First poor Colin the whale, who was abandoned by his mother, has been finally put to sleep. And then there was the amazing story of the four-eared cat and two-headed turtle my colleague told me about:
Four-Eared Cat story
But back to Colin. I felt very sad when I read in the Daily Telegraph that certain animal organisations thought there wasn’t much they could do for him. On one hand, I thought there could be a chance – no matter how slim – he could have been kept alive by being fed by human intervention. Or, as the Telegraph said, he could have been encouraged to go back to sea and hopefully be adopted by another whale. On the other hand, the Telegraph pointed out there were cons associated with these options. If he is coaxed out to sea, it may cause fatigue and stress. And it is unlikely he will be adopted by another whale. If he is hand fed, it is also unlikely he will survive. In light of this, maybe it was best that he was put to sleep but part of me still thinks something more could have been done. On the other hand, at least he has finally been put out of his motherless misery and can at last rest in peace. We will miss you, Colin.

But I was utterly disgusted by a woman on the radio yesterday in regards to Colin, her exact words were something like -
"This was not a time to move quickly, we needed to have meetings and asses the correct way to handle the situation"
Um EXCUSE ME!!! He's DEAD!!! Dont you think SOMETHING ANYTHING would have been better than NOTHING! That argument might have worked if he had lived. I was talking to shop owners yesterday and we all agreed they should have tried something. I agreed wholeheartedly with a farmer I heard on the radio - you have to TRY. If a motherless young thing - ANYTHING - sheep or cow or rabbitt whatever, if you TRY and it wants to live it will figure it out. Foals can learn to drink milk out of buckets on their second day. So Im sticking by my standpoint that the risks here are obvious - they did nothing, he died. If something had been done and he still died, at least we could say we tried. Theres nothing to say now.
Yet again, mother nature has tested us, and we have failed.
