CY is Terrified of Dogs

Years ago, when I was studying for my first degree, I met this girl called CY (from memory, I think her initials stood for Chin Yee but don’t quote me). She was an overseas student from Hong Kong and we used to hang out together.
One day we were walking around campus when I saw a small dog a few metres away. CY immediately froze. I asked her what the matter was and she told me she was scared of dogs. I was a little surprised as the dog was small and unthreatening but I let it go. Then I met another overseas student from Hong Kong who was also terrified of dogs. I wondered what was going on here. I asked another Hong Kong student and she said dogs are not very common in Hong Kong which is why people are often afraid of them.
Fair enough. Speaking of small dogs, I remembered one of my friends had a husband who hated small dogs. My friend was a big fan of pugs. She thought they were cute to look at and every time she saw a pug she would stop to admire its beauty. Her husband, on the other hand, would stay away from the dog and once they were on their way, would tell her how he wanted to kick it. My friend never understood why her husband was so nasty towards small dogs. When she told me about his behaviour, I was really surprised as he was a laid-back, hippy-ish kind of guy, not the type you would normally associate with cruelty to animals.

I absolutely hated the hunting dogs that used to live next door. They used to hunt my horses as a pack - one creeping in the grass behind them while another held their attention. I used to go out with the axe in case they came after me. And they would have. They thought my land was their territory. My darling colt was only a baby then - god help any dog who tried it now. Its his territory and he even chases my mum out of it!
Maybe for some people from other countries its because stray dogs in a pack can be really dangerous? I know it can be a big problem in india. I dont get birds. Ive seen asians in Sydney scream when pigeons get too close, and Ive had plenty of auzzie mates full on hit the deck screaming when my birds fly near them. Like, they just want to say hello! Its not like they can hurt you at all!
