David’s Solution to Animals That Bite

At school, I hung out with a bunch of guys known as the nerds and for good reason: they were good at maths and science and had geeky interests such as Latin. Of course, the wonderful thing about this group of guys was their huge vocabulary. I got to learn words I would otherwise never have heard of. David (AKA Gilbert) had the biggest vocabulary and he wasn’t afraid to show it. He talked about the torus and scatology. He also told me birds poo, pee and bonk from the same orifice, otherwise known as the cloaca. Another guy, Thomas, told me in some cultures, Coca Cola is used as birth control. Thomas was so bright he used to always win the maths competition. In fact, we used to joke that Thomas didn’t need to get a job like everyone else; all he needed to do was enter the maths comp and live off the money prize.

One day David saw me with some stickers about safety. The stickers told us to wear a helmet and to put our seatbelt on. On the one about what to do if we got bitten by an animal, David wrote “Bite back”.

Im down with that. Usually baring teeth and slowly opening jaw is enough - universal for "I'll bite ya!" but I have nipped the horses before. Usually end up with a mouthful of fur.

Why did you nip your horses? Were they being naughty?

That headline is misleading. Was all that just for the joke bout biting back?
Incidentally, reptiles also have a cloaca and the word is the origin of the slangword 'clacker' as in; You can stick this post up your clacker!

Glens a ray of sunshine aint he?

They bit me first! In horse politics, 'eye for an eye' is usually taken literally.

HI Glen

Yes, the headline was about the joke.

I didn't know that reptiles also have cloacas. Thanks for sharing.

Kleonaptra, that's good to know. But why do they bite you in the first place?

A horse doesnt have any kind of appendage it can use as a hand except its mouth. Their top lip is their opposable limb! Horses like to mouth and nibble, which I allow, though most horse people dont. I dont mind the odd nip or lovebite, and the geldings have learned whats on and whats not and usually I can trust them. But the colt is another matter, its called 'coltish behaviour' which basically boils down to misbehaving mischievousness and sexual frustration. His instincts hard wire him to find females to mate with and fight other males to get them, particularly at his age. Denied this, he has to make his fun in other ways, which usually means lulling me into a false sense of security by rubbing and nuzzling gently, then sinking in his teeth as hard as possible.
