Door Knobs for Cats?

Pre-cats, my friend Brett liked to keep the doors in each room in his house shut. This was until he became the parent of Butterscotch and Gingersnap. The reason? While his babies worked out how to close the doors, they were too small to be able to reach the door knob so they would stand there and start scratching the door as their way of telling Brett they want the door opened. Having heard the scratching myself, I can confirm it is very annoying to listen to after a while. The sound of cat claws digging into wood is not pleasant. Brett soon left all the doors open so his felines can come and go as they like.
After telling a colleague this, I said, “It’s a shame the door knobs couldn’t be lower. Then it would be interesting to see if the cats could work out how to turn the door knob and open the door. The problem is the human would have to reach down to be able to open the door.”
“You could have two sets of door knobs,” suggested my colleague.
“You mean one on top and one on the bottom? But that’s pointless as the cats would have to open both door knobs to be able to get the door open.” That is, unless there was a way for the door to be opened only by using either of the door knobs.
