It was my birthday and, as usual, Eliza and her husband Kumar (names changed) were running late. This is a annual thing we go through: I book my birthday dinner at the Arun Thai Restaurant in Sydney’s Potts Point. My sister and I arrive there on time. Another friend, arrives shortly after. Then my mobile will ring with Kumar telling me they’re running late and not to wait for them before ordering.
So when the same routine unfolded last year I didn’t expect anything unusual. When my mobile rang I picked it up expecting Kumar to tell us to start before him. Yes, it was Kumar. Yes, he and Eliza were running late but wait – this time there was a good reason: while they were on their way to Potts Point from the CBD, a bird flew past them while Eliza was chatting to Kumar. The bird let one drop and yep…it landed right inside Eliza’s mouth.
It sounds mean but the unexpected nature of this news caused me to burst out laughing. So did my friend. Kumar was now telling me he was taking Eliza to the public toilets in the David Jones building near Hyde Park so she can rinse her mouth out.
When Eliza and Kumar arrived I couldn’t help but ask them the unaskable question: What does bird poo taste like? “Bitter,” said Eliza. “It kind of burned.” Okay!
So whenever you’re venturing anywhere near birds, remember not to have your mouth open. If it could happen to Eliza, it could easily happen to you.
