Faux Pas of the Week
April 26th 2010 21:00
Like many socially inept/Aspergic people, I am useless around kids. I don’t know what to say to them. I don’t want to talk down to them, nor do I want to talk in a cutesy voice.
So far, I have been lucky. Almost all my friends are in the same social demographic as me: inner city living lovers who also don’t want or have kids.
Then came the day I went to visit my best friend Andrea, who lives in the ‘burbs. She picked me up from the station and said she had to quickly buy some bread from the local bakery. She asked if I could baby sit for a minute or two. I gulped.
“Sure,” I said as she raced out of the car. What am I going to say to her two children? I looked at them. They looked at me. I struggled for a way to break the ice. Finally, I pulled out photos of Butterscotch.
“This is my friend Butterscotch,” I said. “Do you like him?”
“No,” both kids replied.
I then forgot that they were allergic to cats. In fact, the eldest used to cry whenever he saw their pet cat. Nice one!
