Figaro Attacks Me
June 23rd 2009 21:00
Flat hunting one day, I came across Figaro, the lithe glossy black cat that I have not seen for several months. It turns out he lives in a building near my place.
I was delighted to be reacquainted with my friend, who once walked me home one day. How sweet is that? Figaro seemed equally enchanted by me. He rubbed his head along my things, crawled under my dress and stuck his head between my legs (I was squatting at the time) and let me stroke his wonderful shiny coat. At one point, he even lay on his side and let me touch his belly.
After several moments, Figaro headed for the garden. A woman walked by and said, “Hello Figs.” I reached down to stroke him and all of a sudden he turned on me. I was rewarded with a bite on my wrist but my darling friend must have covered his teeth with his lips as the bite didn’t hurt.
“Bloody cat,” I said, touching my wrist. Figaro turned his back on me and started chewing on the grass.
I ran into Figaro again when I was walking home. I said hello to him. He ignored me. I thought, fine, and continued home, unescorted.
Later on, when I was telling my friend Andrea what had happened, she said Figaro probably gave me a love bite since it didn’t hurt. I don’t know what to think. Figaro looked very grouchy after he bit me so I’m going to err on the side of caution and assume he was upset because I was petting him for so long.

Try to return his friendship but some of these breed of cats can turn quite nasty for reasons unknown, I just think it is their disposition and wish to show who is the boss.
I remember nursing one such animal, put on my lap by its owner and then left ( I think she was irresponsible when I learnt something of the cat's history) and I was terrified to move or even induce it to leave my lap, I can't recall the precise details, but usually I do have a way with cats and can make friends with them very easily, I give them some time, often by letting them smell the back of my hand, before taking too much licence and many get to know me and greet me lovingly, I do the same with dogs. I just love animals, even the big cats not that I'd ever be game enough to put that to the test.
I hope figaro comes around for you, but if he doesn't, there are many more cats in the world. I think your landlord is very unkind, knowing how much you'd love a cat, but it can be a problem if you are renting and are suddenly required to move on.

You sound like a regular reader so you would probably know of my encounters with the Grouchy Tuxedo Cat who can go from affectionate to aggressive within seconds. He definitely doesn't like being touched too much and will bite and scratch when he's had enough.
That was why I backed off from Figaro but don't worry, I don't intend to cold shoulder him.
As for my landlord, I can understand his point of view. He has let me rent a beautiful unit and I am sure he is worried about cats scratching the furniture, spraying urine on the walls etc. Yes, I would love to have my own cat but I get plenty of kitty love from the neighbourhood cats such as Figaro.

Cats can be like that... having my own little sweetheart, I'm betting that the bite was a love nip. 'Cause he could have hurt you if he wanted to. It was either that or that he wanted to be left alone for a little while, but I'm betting on the love nip.
You must remember that cats think they're Gods. The Egyptians worshipped them and they've never forgotten it.
He'll most likely come around. Probably just a little cranky.
I miss my cat

That's what my friend Andrea says. I trust her as she has been Mummy to several cats.
If only they could talk. Wouldn't it be lovely if Figaro could say, "I've had enough, thanks" or "I'm going to give you a little love bite".
Thanks for dropping by.
